need help !! downgrade engine?
hi guys, my wife has 2000 civic ex (auto ) model, and blew up the motor.. and we've looked all over to find the EX engine but had no luck or asking for extreme price( $1000 ~1300)..
so here is my question, i can easily find lower model like LX, DX engine. but i know exahuse manifold, and intake manifold are different... can i use my EX parts and replace them? would i have engine light? and what other possible problems will i have ?? thank you guys in advance
i'm not looking to get whole conversion here .. i wish i could drop B16 or B18 motors and do the 5 speed conversion... but i'm short on money T..T please help!~

if you put a d16y7 in there you can use the d16y8 (ex engine) exhaust manifold no problem. The intake manifold will also bolt up, but there is a certain way to run the tiny coolant lines to the IACV by the throttle body. You should be able to find a DIY on here easy for a y8 IM conversion on a y7. I did it on my old 96 hatch and it ran just fine, no CEL, no rough idle issues etc... just have to do it right. It has been so long I don't remember how though. the other thing you will need is an LX ECU. I say LX bc it had power option, but I don't think the ecu has anything to do with that stuff, so a DX or LX ECU should work just fine. But you do need the ecu to match the engine. and it MIGHT need to be from a 99-00 model DX or LX due to the OBD-2a and OBD-2b differences. You may need somebody else to chime in on that specific answer. make sure you replace the intake manifold gasket, and get the old one cleaned off the head really well to ensure an air tight fit.
Hope that helps.

whats wrong? if its just one part of the engine thats out like the bottom or the head just replace that section... if your gonna swap the whole motor any d series will basically bolt in (from my understanding) assuming its from the same generation. for example, i don't know about your generation civic, but i am assuming its obd2, in which case you cant put an obd1 engine in without making accommodation's.
Pretty sure it is obd-1... which will get you into a whole different amount of work. Like supermeister stated... what "blew up" on the d16y8 you have? could be a lot easier and less expensive to just fix that section of the engine.
A D16Y7 should drop into place and run fine as long as you use the corresponding automatic P2E ECU. The only thing I don't know is if the EX automatic transmission is different or not (the '92 - '95 automatics are all the same, so one would expect the '96 - '00 transmissions to be the same way). The automatic transmission really puts you between a rock and a hard place otherwise. (can't run an OBD1 engine with OBD1 ECU due to the transmission) The only other thing I can think of that should work is a JDM OBD2 SOHC non Vtec ZC.

The timing will be off somewhat, with a manual its not a big deal, you simply use an OBD2B to OBD1 adapter harness and run a P28. Also several states wont allow you to use an engine thats older than the vehicle its going into, not sure if thats a concern for the OP or not. Where I am we can get away with pretty much anything.
