Default 1987 Honda CRX question

Hi all, I just acquired a stock 87 CRX in decent condition and I'm going to use it at the track for a little autoX for a few months before I strip everything out of it and turn it into a hornet car (http://www.westernspeedway.net/results/results9.htm, short oval races).

I have a little money to spend on it and I'd like to power it up a bit and better the handling but I was hoping for some feedback on what mods you think would be the best bang for my buck for the 87 CRX?

Thanks in advance!
-Jordan

Make sure before you start modding your car that it is not going to put you into another class. As for things to do to the 1g rex's there isnt really a bunch. If you can do a motor swap and still be competitive you can get a d16a1 from your local wrecking yard and put that in start helping you out. If your crx isnt a si then the swap will be much more difficult.

redpepperracing.com should have lots of info on first gen crx's. but yeah you can get a 86-89 teg and swap that all into it, hasport has b series mounts etc...but maybe you would want to concentrate on wieght reduction and suspension...

Thanks for the help with this guys. Weight reduction is definitely in the plans as is a full tune up and probably a new exhaust. I was also thinking some sort of sway bar and performance shocks/tires might get me a good bang for my buck. Any feedback?

How much difference would a new carb make, or perhaps a new air intake?

Thanks 93formula for that redpepperracing site reccomendation. They say the easiest way to more power is to put on dual weber carbs but I'm thinking that'll be pretty pricey and i think that'll also put me out of contention for hornet races. (http://www.redpepperracing.com/wiki/...1500_engine%3F)

This car is the base model crx with a 1.5L engine and not the si. The engine also has 350K Kms on it already but it still pulls decent once warm.

Actually I just looked it up on carfax.com and apparently it is an SI model. sweet Also, I just transfered the registration over this afternoon and it turns out its an 86 not an 87.

Bang for the buck is to add a rear sway bar. Addco makes a good one.

I have a 86 civic hatch si(same as chassis as crx) I use for short oval racing. If you are racing on dirt lock the front end(weld the spider gears together). I got a good header for about $170 shipped from summitracing.com (hedman I believe). Cherry bomb makes a good race muffler- had a single chamber flowmaster, the cherry bomb is better and cheaper. Lighten the fly wheel. They were able to get 7 pounds off of mine(make sure they balance it after taking the weight off). The stock d15a3 can rev pretty high- watch going over 8500 for too long or if will blow- ask me how I know. If you keep the RPM's under 8000 you should be good. The car is very good for racing. I was able to pull away from pintos with 200+ hp with just the header, flywheel, locked front end, and muffler. make sure you put inner tubes on the right side at the very least- no matter what they tell you at the tire place you will pop the tire off the bead without inner tubes.

All of this info is for racing on dirt only. I have not raced on asphalt so I do not know what works on it.

I race the Sport Compact division at Victorville Auto Raceway
