Default Temp Guage problems

My temp guage in my car has been acting up from time to time since my swap. I'm not sure which sensor it is on the side of the head that it reads from but it tends to just go up and down for no reason. Like the other day it didnt want to go to half (it took like 40 mins to get there). Then today it was @ half in like 3 seconds and then started to go up and then down for no reason. I was trying to replicate the problem because i thought it was overheating but there is no bubbling in the radiator and nothing in the overflow and the car runs like normal. Although the temp just goes up and down. What sensor is it that is messed up?

There are two coolant temperature sensors below the distributor. You are interested in the one-wire sensor (=sending unit for dash temp gauge). If you disconnect the wire and ground it, the gauge temp should rise to full hot. Be sure to unground prior to it reading full hot.

alright thanks alot. Ill check it out. The sensors and **** got banged up pretty bad during the swap because my friends are tards. I hope the wire doesnt have breaks in it. But at least now I know which one does what.
