Default EGR valve removal - huh?

Cleared the code for the EGR valve yesterday, then took a look thinking "Ok, I'll get out the GumOut and have a spray."

Except... WTF tool is needed to remove that sucker?
I see the bolt threads go through the cast dog-ears, but I'll be jiggered if any socket I own fits;
The inspection mirror suggests (half blind, crippled in my mind?) that there might be a trick...

Any ideas?

Thanks~
