Default Let's clear this ref ticket business up

So I've done some searching, but I can't find a definitive and clear answer for this question. If you get pulled over, cop gives you a ref ticket and sends you to the ref...can you avoid the state ref period by just paying the ref ticket? OR do you actually have to pay the ticket, plus go get your car reffed by the referee, and keep getting it tested till it pasts?

Reason why I'm asking this is because I'm getting conflicting stories.

Story #1: Friend of a friend (not sure if all the details are true, thus I'm asking) got pulled over in one of those mobile smog stations around the 55 on edinger (for those of you that live in Orange county, CA). He didn't pass, sent to the ref...still didn't pass. His car is no longer able to be registered in the state of california.

Story #2: I can't quite remember, but it was a thread on here about a dude asking how how he can pass his car because he got a ticket to go see the ref...another member said, "just pay the ticket and forget about it."

SO i kinda need this cleared up because I"m contemplating either BAR-ing my B16...but if you can just pay the ticket every time you get pulled over and not worry about losing your car...then I'm going to go the k20 route. Thanks in advance for any insight. Let's post actual experiences also, no "I heard that..." etc. I'm hoping this would be a clear place for everyone to just find this pertinent info.

When sent to the REF you have to go, plus pay =/

My friend just had to go but he swaped his gsr for stock engine before he went.

You can just pay for it but ur information is in the system as not passing. So if u get pulled over the cops know that u didn't go to the ref and the penalty might be worst.

You have two options.

1. Get it fixed, pay a fix it fee. (normally 10 bux)
2. Don't get it fixed, pay a higher fee (it's not required that you pay a "fix it ticket" but your ticket amount will be much higher)

Now as for your first story, it looks as though there is no way out of that one. You have to fix it to get it registered, and pay a fee.

1. pay the flat fine of $360-$380 fine n foeget about it but i heard its 2x as much for a second ref ticket

2. go to the ref n see what happens n if he fails, the ref will u give a list of everythin u need to fix to be able to pass and then pay the fine or do wutever u can to pass the car

3.i heard u can sell the car to ur buddy or someone u noe and fine a way to get smog papers showing it will pass the sniffer test, go to court and tell the judge u sold the car and the judge will dismiss ur ticket and just pay the court fee..i tried this but didnt get a smog paper saying i passed so the judge still made me pay the $365 ticket and now my car is stuck partially under my bros name bcuz he cant fully register it without smogging it

i got this ticket 7months ago n im still tryin to pass ref cuz i failed my first time

I forgot to mention, if you don't live in california, this doesn't apply to you, but thanks SerN1 for the experience anyway.

I need to find someone who's been stopped multiple times. As for the first story, I forgot to mention that my friend said the car is no longer allowed to be registered, PERIOD. I'm pretty sure that the last part to that story is a lie as I think the law doesn't go that far and it seems too harsh for just not passing smog twice.

I was searching around honda-tech and saw that getting a k20 BAR'd is a PITA. I might just get my b16 BAR'd and just call it a day. However, doesn't help that I have a b16a sir II motor and not a USDM b16a2 0_0

Anyone know whether a k20 passes a lot easier or not (we're not talking BAR'd)? Disregarding the visual inspection and the dude is just kewl like dat...lol.

Instead of paying some crazy amount and risking the chance of getting caught again, why not just fix the dang thing for 500 and pay the small court fee?

I grew up in san diego, i moved to yuma 4 months ago. I have been pulled over countless times in SD and not one ticket.
In AZ there are no smog laws.

in order to pass ref. wit a k series, u will need to swap a rsx/ep fuel tank into ur car to be able to run a returnless style fuel system...its been done once there is a thread on here just search for it..im sure if its a stock k series wit just minor bolts ons and a stock ecu then it will pass no problem..

im still in the process of gettin my jdm gsr to pass bar

SerN1, you are one lucky fella hahaha. I always get paranoid driving my Ek around. Given yes i opted not to put an exhaust set up on my car to not make my car more noticeable to the authorities, I'm still paranoid about it. It sucks living in cali -_-

oh yea as for the k20 thread passing BAR, i know what thread you are talking about, its the EG with the guy putting the rsx dash over too right? Iono, I remember seeing the picture of his interior and the fuel pump area looks HACKED 0_0 I wouldn't want to do that to my EK...I rather just BAR my b16 and then turbo it or build off of it and just return it back to stock when I need to smog it.

i'll give you my personal experience. long story short:

-got pulled over for speeding
-got a ref ticket for my no name intake
-i thought i had to go to the ref cuz the cop said so
-went to court, got an extension
-found out when i went again that i could pay the fine and not have to go see the ref
-i paid the fine ($530 total w/speeding ticket) and didn't go to the ref

hope that helps. oh and i recently had to go see the ref again for a noise test. i was worried he would say something about my first ticket, but he didn't. i passed the test with no issues.
