Default Driving without a muffler

Yesterday i was passing someone on the highway while in my stock 1991 civic DX. As i approached this other car i heard this awful noise. I thought that their car had something seriously wrong. But after i was 6 car lengths ahead of them i realized that it was not their car that was making the horrible noise, it was mine.

So anyway i was dragging my muffler. I pulled over and took the muffler completely off of my car and put it in my trunk. Problem solved -- i drove to my next appointment.

Is there any risk in me driving without a muffler? The pipe between the cat and muffler is completely severed. The pipe broke about 3 inches away from the muffler.

Could i drive it like this over the weekend? Can i go to work now? Or do i need to get this muffler put back on right away? (i'm going to be making this descion over the next 20 minutes)

thanks for reading

Can get a noise ticket, or (I forget the vio) for not having all original parts (like driving without a bumper).

I think in CA it's illegal to drive without a muffler. Your results may vary in PA.

My friend ripped off his muffler in his 91 DX by pulling into a driveway head on (and too fast), so he rocked it without a muffler for a while. It actually wasn't very loud, and the exhaust note was pretty cool to boot.

You shouldn't have any exhaust valve burning or anything if you still have a cat.

The only problem would be if your black or latino, you'll get pulled over in 20 minutes.

I hit a dip on the freeway (seperated my cat & header) .. I didnt notice untill I got off the freeway (25 miles later) and my car sounded like a tractor.. everything was okay though.. you should be fine, except for the legality of it mentioned above!
