Icon2 Anybody with 300+ whp J30A1?

I'm starting from scratch on a stock AV6 coupe from 2000. I've owned it since it was new, but just recently have had any opportunities to mod it and add some much needed power. I'd like to try to use the orig block/heads if possible. I'm looking for ideas, so if you have reached 300 whp or more, please throw out some insight on how you got there (parts/mods). I'd appreciate it.

The tranny can barely hold stock power, you're not going to make that much power on it haha.

That's what I hear. I've had good luck for 105,000 mi, but that probably means trouble is around the corner. I'm considering the CL-S 6MT swap to better take advantage of the power (when my orig tranny blows up).

Turbocharge it. User ElevatedJ32 made 500whp on a GT35r on his J32 engine and emanage.

Well over 300whp is easily obtained with a SC'ed J30a4, not sure how the j30a1 would do with it.

The only S/C available for that motor that I know of is the Comptech (+/- 40 HP = $4000), which is questionable at best IMO. Is there a way to get to 300 N/A?

What you're asking for requires about the same amount of cash if not more.

Your motor can do it but you'll have to get the head work, manifold, headers, cams and EMS to make it work.

I'm aware that it won't be cheap; however, I'd tend to think there are better things to spend $4000 on than something that gives only 40 whp. If $4000 worth of engine work produces twice that, I think I'd rather go that route.

This is helpful. Does anyone have recommendations on shops (preferably in the southeast) that do a good job with head work? That's not something you just drop off at any local machine shop and hope for the best.

Portflow for head work, Benson for sleeves. Find a shop that will put it altogether for ya and after $10K deep, you will be way ahead of the game!
If anything, contact NVA-AV6 from v6performance.net and he will much better assist you.

4k isn't enough man unless you're talented yourself.

300WHP is ver achievable NA with a J engine, just not the J30A1, that engine got screwed over by Honda in the worst way. I have several "Franken" J35 and J36 builds all making 280+WHP and 250+ WTQ, but as otheers have stated to build one of these and swap out for a 6sp trans (none of the V6 ATs will hold the power for long) will be a $9K-$10K affare. Here is a link to one of the 6th gens that I have built to give you some ideas.

http://www.v6performance.net/forums/...d.php?t=141615

Now these engines were built to accept up to 10PSI of boost thru eaither Turbo or SC which would put them in the 400WHP range.

How do you figure it's not achievable? :sighs:

The J30A1 is a pitiful example to the Honda J series V6, 9:1 compression, cast internals, FRM sleeves, minisqule 29mm intake valves and very small induction system, it is easier and cheaper to start with a J35A4 from eaither a Pilot or Oddy and scrap the J30A1 entirely.

Yeah that's why you alter it everywhere.

Bigger displacement will make it easier by good means.

small valve size for starters and do you honestly expect to double stock WHP? (150whp)

btw, increasing j30a displacement means it's no longer a j30a anymore

it's hard to get a j32a2 to put down 300 whp na without increasing it's displacement and that is an engine that responds EXTREMELY WELL TO BOLT ON MODS

Muffinman,

holding power of the auto is not bad, it's lack of lubrication for 2nd gear that kills it......

Firstly you can port that head change the valves or change over to the type S head, bigger valves aren't the sole solution.

The acura/accord community hasn't done what the civic community has gone to the extreme to so I wouldn't say it can't do it.

Oh, you can do all kinds of things to the J30A1 heads, but why when it is MUCH cheaper to just get a set of J32A2 or J35A4 heads that have 35-36mm intake valves to begin with as well as much wider intake and exhaust ports, I can pickup a 80K or less J35A4 anytime for $1K or less, it will cost you that much to get the J30A1 heads reworked to match to capabilities of the before mentioned J heads.

In my eye's if you're going to try with this motor you better be damn resourceful why would I want them flowing the same as other stock CFM flows? It better exceed them by a large margin and secondly we have no idea of the geometric properties of these ports if the J30a1 has more '' thickness '' it's a better head to port with rather than an S head.

That just a crumble off of the cookie for goals.

The '$4000' was just an example based on the price of the Comptech s/c...not an end-all price that I'm willing to pay for a set amount of HP.

There have been some good suggestions thrown around, and good arguments behind them thus far.

Tell me if I'm wrong here, but based on my prior research and the comments in this thread, it seems like it would be much cheaper (or at least much more efficient) to swap engines (possibly J35 block w/ J32-S heads) and do the tranny swap than it would be for a shop to highly modify the J30?
