Default Aluminum Exhaust

Let's see em! I plan on doing a 3.5" or 4" aluminum exhaust for my s2k. Would like to see some of your setups!

Probably a better thread for the welding/fabrication forum instead

I didn't know which to post it in. But I figured the only guys running aluminum exhaust would be turbo guys because of the large piping looking for weight savings.

Not sure if this is really on topic for the thread, but it fits with the title:

What have people noticed related to in-car sound level with aluminum exhaust tube compared to steel? I'm thinking I might want to try some this spring, but if it's known to make the car super noisy inside, then I probably won't mess with it.

Thanks in advance!

Any thoughts on in-car sound level compared to steel tubing? I understand those suckers in the pics are not quiet street systems, but still you may have some observations?

Thanks!

its hard to say. i think if your at the point where you use your car on the street and what not--- where you are concerned about sound, the aluminum exhaust probably isnt worth while at that point.

it seems when you go to a 3.5-4 inch exhaust...its actually louder over all than open downpipe/header. thats when you use a "race muffler" anyways

Okay, thanks!

I'm planning on only running 3", into a pretty good sized oval Magnaflow, so I may give it a try just to find out how well it works. I'm thinking an eBay intercooler pipe kit will give me most of the bends and whatnot that I need, although not much cheaper than Global-Tech, so I'll probably just go that way. Everyone seems happy enough with their mandrel bends and overall quality I guess. . .

Are people also running aluminum down pipes also? That seems like a lot of heat right off the turbo for aluminum.

It won't melt the downpipe unless your tune is really really f'ed. And at that point I think you will have some engine problems too

dont use that ebay tubing, its generally thinner than 16g and i have gotten calls about that cracking/blowing holes in it.

i made an aluminum downpipe for a K series car that went 9.3 at over 160....it only lasted 2 pass's before it blasted a hole right through it. the downpipe had to make a really sharp turn directly off the turbo and i think that was the problem. either way, i just stick with stainless downpipes now

I've seen an aluminum down pipe sag after a few dyno runs and track day

Okay, that solves it, thanks!

I guess I'll get my stuff from global-tech, and maybe if I'm lucky welding it will be easier than it was on that eBay tubing too. I hope!

Thanks!

Sorry for the thread jack but is that a resonator on the end of some of those exhausts? I am looking for some kind of inline muffler or resonator i can place under the car so i dont have to run the exhaust all the way back of the car.

just weld the ss muffler to the ss downpipe, and that will eliminate an extra vband at the rear of the car when running al exhaust
