I got a 2000 Honda Prelude, i recently changed my oil and for some reason when the car is on my oil leaks and my oil light is on. Im not sure where the leak is coming from but when the car is off it doesnt leak. i checked the oil pan bolt and the oil filter, they are both tighten and its not leaking from there...could it be from the head gasket maybe?

if anyone knows or have an idea of what the problem is, could you help me out? that would be great. Thanks

 

we can't see the underside of your car. Clean your block thoroughly and follow where the oil comes from. If you have to, go buy the dye you put in your crankcase and rent/purchase a black light. The dye will light up and show you the way.

If you get under your car rub your hand around the base of your oil filter. If theres wet spots its your oil cooler O ring. If its not comming from there it could be comming from your cam cap seal. The oil will usually appear under your tranny around where your dust shield for your fly wheel is. Report back once you find roughly where the oil is collecting or comming from. If it drains oil that fast though its likely the oil cooler o ring as that leak usually only occurs if car is running (oil system is pressurized). Hopefully its your oil cooler o ring, its the cheapest easiest to get at part that exists in your seal package.

 

its actually leaking from the driverside like around the crank pulley somewhere i believe...i cant really tell where its really coming from tho..

so the oil cooling o ring is located around the oil filter?

 

oh ****...that might be your main seal dood. Thats a major problem. Your timing belt could be getting soaked with oil and than its only a matter of time. You should get your timing belt cover pulled and get this checked out asap.

The oil cooler o ring is behind the pedistal where the oil filter spins into.

 

Like I said though if you wanna know for sure your gonna have to clean your block!!. You and I can discuss this all day but untill you do some leg work we are all just guessing.

 

really?! im not saying its coming from my crank pulley..just something i know on that side..

 

is it leaking a lot or a lil bit? one time i changed my oil and the oil seal on my old filter stayed on the block. when i put the new filter on, oil shot out. also a friend told me that on the block where the timing belt is, there is a plastic plug that can slowly blow out causing a leak around that area.

 

its leaking enough for me to run out of oil real fast but it only leaks while the car is on

an oil cooler never came stock on preludes...not to my knowledge anyways correct me if i am wrong but i never seen a oem oil cooler

 

Number 18 is the oil cooler, which sits under the oil filter, 33 is the o ring.

 

its the oring on the oil filter I had this happen to me thought I hit a chunck of ice and punctured my pan, turned out that the oring just finally give out,most expensive oil change ever $88.00

 

Probably blew out the balance shaft seal if it's coming from under the timing covers. DO NOT run the engine with the oil pressure light on or you WILL damage the bearings.
