Default Abs brakes feel worse?

97 Integra GSR

Hello folks,

I haven't seen this problem mentioned elsewhere but... My brake pedal feels like it has too much damping. In other words, if I jab the brakes quickly, I hear the sound of air blowing off (pssssh) but not much happens, but if I apply slow even pressure, they work fine. Thus the problem is that I can't get on the brakes quickly, even though the stopping power is fine.
Another way to put it is that if I apply the brakes quickly the pedal feels hard, but if I apply them slowly, the pedal feels fine.
I don't have a spongy pedal, or a pedal that sinks to the floor, or another other problem like that. The brakes have been bleed.

The other integra I have driven without ABS did not have this problem.
I can give the brakes a quick stab, and it manages to jolt the car as expected

Pump up your pedal with the motor off. It should get rock hard. Start the vehicle, it should sink a hair. If it doesn't drop, you've got a booster problem.
If you're hearing air hissing, you've got a booster problem.

Thanks for the reply. I tried the test, and the pedal did sink a bit when I turned on the engine.

If there was a booster problem, wouldn't there be a problem with the brakes under normal driving?

I'm just kind of wondering if there is some kind of constriction in the system that prevents the instantaneous transfer of pressure from the pedal to the calipers. Like I mentioned, the brakes work fine under normal conditions, but the faster I press the pedal, the harder it feels.
