Can you please tell me why I should buy a 98 Accord LX with 48K miles?
It is AUTO of course.
Are they as reliable as any other Honda?
How come when I test drove it, I really did not feel the VTEC?
I am choosing between the accord, the passat 1.8T and the Volvo turbo. All 1998.
The passat 1.8T seems to have problems up the ***.
The Volvo is cool but hard to find...
The Accord is pretty and is a Honda.
Please share any info.
Thank you,
Nikos

You can't feel the VTEC since the changeover is at 4000rpm and is matched perfectly to the ideal crossover.
Its all in the maintenance. The Accord should be fine. One of my friends has an 89 Accord EXi that just rolled over 350,000kms or about 219,000 miles. And it runs fine, you wouldn't think it has half the mileage.
My Accord has just about 88,000kms or 55,000miles and I'm not worried, you pretty much said it yourself, its a Honda. Why worry?
Good Luck!

About the 98 passat turbo.
1998 was the first year of the B5. That year in particular (and some 1999s) have teething pains:
Problematic control arm bushings ($900 to fix)
Turbo issues: wastegate problems, and turbo failures (no heat shield on the oil line to the turbo.)
Oil leaks, from the valve cover and cam seals (mine is leaking now.)
Water pumps have been known to fail (mine was on its way)
There is a design problem with the timing belt tensioner - some people who were waiting for the 105k change interval lost the tensioner, causing the belt to slip, and damaging valves ($$$$)
Add to this some minor issues like squeaks, rattles, loose trim, and light bulbs failing
So I guess no passat....

Hey Nikos - http://www.ipdusa.com/productdetails...categoryID=211
190 ---> 230 hp. Add a filter and exhaust, do base wastegate mod, get more power
But I'm not biased or anything
