my p/s pump bearing just went out recently and i rebuilt the pump

the whining wasn't affected by turning the wheels, only by increasing RPMs. I think it's your power steering pump.

Also check for slipping belts first.

no need to cut the belt off... it takes like 2 minutes to remove...
loosen the two bolts on the left of the power steering pump, then loosen the top bolt until the belt is loose enough to slide off the pulleys

or you can take a funnel and put the small end by your ear and point the funnel at the p/s pump with engine running. then rev the engine via throttle body and listen.

so it started making the noise explained louder today.. and started to sqeal.. and i smelt something burning. so i thought maybe the power steering pump was burnt out so i cut the belt.. i started it for 2 min and it was still making this noise.. i shut it off and took a look but could not see anything. i started it again and no noise? maybe a loose alternator belt?? someone?

Since it's not the p/s pump, just do this around the rest of the engine bay until you can locate the noise.

so yah im not to sure.. the thing with the funnel didnt really work.. but its now just on and off squealing.. i felt the belts for tension and they seem not bad. the ac belt seemed to feel as if it had chipps out of the running surface? would that do it? even tho it would just be free spinning cuz i dont use my a/c right now since its winter

nobody is going to be able to tell you what it is. it could be a million things. get under the hood, and figure out where the noise is coming from. nobody on here can do that for you.

is the bottom bolt still in the alternator? same thing happened to me belt seemed tight but the bottom bolt had fallen out and when it revved somehow it would still squeel.

It is helpful... that's what you have to do to locate a noise.

It could be any number of various bearings, belts, etc.

Try taking off all your drive belts and starting the engine. See if it still makes the noise. If it stops the noise, it is either the alt. belt or a/c belt, or the alt. or a/c compressor themselves.

i figured it out.. the reasoin i couldnt look at it really is because its been minus 40 here for the last 2 weeks. anyways it was just my shitty a/c belt that was hopping out of the grooves and rubbing against my alt. belt. Smallest thing.

I will say this man if you do end up putting a new water pump in u might as well put in a new timing belt also cuz they go hand and hand.
