Aren't you supposed to cut the can then weld it?? I thought that was the trick. Either way looks really nice.

a guy that had done a weld test at a company that i worked for did a can cut in half and welded it back together.i didnt see it done.i have never felt the need to try it myself.plus i dont have a pulse machine.not that it stopped this guy.what he used was an old miller 400 amp machine the size of a refrigerator.

The positioner helps make it look pretty seamless. Lets see you do one manually.

I cut an arizona green tea can in half and tried doing a butt-weld. I had my machine set at like 6 amps or something ridiculous lol. After a couple tries I got one or two tack welds but never a bead lol.

my machine only has three programed start modes its on the softest now and i know it would blow a hole in it as soon as i strike an arc at like 2 amps.

It is possibile to weld it cut in half, but the cut and setup has to be perfect. The cutting is the hardest thing to do and get it perfectly even. Where i work we weld as thin as .0009 thick stainless, titanium, inconel and a few other exotics for the aerospace and medical field. Yes i mean less that 1 thousanth. And yes it is done under a microscope. Id really like to see some pictures of someone who has done the can weld after cutting it in half. Ill give it a try this week and let ya know how it goes. But thats got to be really hard to do. Thanks for all the feed back.

I cut a can in half today to take a measurement.. It mic's roughly .0045. It is weldable however you need a machine with very specialized controls like start current, fully adjustable high freak, and the ability to control heat with pulse width and pulse rate. The machines I use can run at a 10th of an amp and they are VERY expensive. If there is someone out there who can do that weld by cutting the can in half and welding it back together with out special equipment for welding and cutting it Id love to see it. Never mind holding the thing in place with out a fixture... Cans are rigid until they are cut hahaha. It would be very difficult to do with out that stuff and the use of a positioner.

So lets see these pictures and what equipment they used.

And for the other guy that asked... A good general rule of thump is that it takes about 1 amp to weld 1 thousandth worth of material, depending on the material and about a million other things.

I did this already, but I threw it away, I'll weld up another when I get in the shop in the morning. Last time I did it I blew some holes in the thin part and had to fill it, so you could weld the center, but you can't get it clean enough. I'll try both.

heres my take on doing this by the side. take 2 beers. dont open them. take a wire brush and clean them. put clean gloves on. chug them. cut them(some how) then weld them. bam! that fix's the problem of cleaning the sides without crushing them. so.. lets see it! i cant even do the bottom of them yet. my welder only goes down to 10amps. BUT i can do it if i had some 1/16th filler. the 3/32 is to hard IMO. so again, lets see this!!!

I did a couple of razor blades a little over a year ago on a Lincoln square wave 350 when I was just starting to do fab stuff. I tried to do it last week on my Sync 500 but even the lowest current I can get from it is too much, melted like half the blade away instantly. I would try again but we're running low on blades

Sharp edge to sharp edge...no overlapping either!!

The razor blade thing happened about three years ago on here. RMF posted some. I tried but had trouble, then he gave me some tips by PM. Anyone saying it's easy...well, that's dependent on perspective. Once you know how to do it...it's fairly easy yes. Trying to get to the point of doing it though..ain't so easy.

Clearly more expensive machines are going to make that job easier as well.

I have some blades with a perfect bead...my boy took it to his work though. 20 year TIG welders at his work didn't believe it could be done, so he took it to them. Granted, TIG'ing for 20 years didn't mean much with these guys, cause their stainless welds I saw were garbage. Point is, I never saw my blades again though.
