Default Fuel gauge lag, 94 civic ex

Just bought a 94 civic ex coupe( :D ) AT( >: ) with 140k miles. There are few problems I am working on myself (o2 sensor, replacing torn seats), but here are some I couldnt find thru google or with common sense.

My fuel gauge(the one next to the speedo) will fluctuate, it is a very slow fluctuation, but it is there. It seems that when i accelerate it decides to go higher, and go down when braking, but its not immediate. It also waits till the engine has run for a bit after filling up to fill even a bit. This isn't a major problem, but it would be nice to know how much fuel I actually have. In turn I can figure out my mpg and decide wheter my o2 sensor is the first thing to be repaired or my distriutor is coming.

Thanks in advance

all most all civics do that my 98 does my friend em1 does it
its because civics do not have baffels in the tanks and the gas moves around which cause the needle to move
its fine and normal and the gas light will come on before your anywhere neer runing out of gas,

Ditto 98civdx's post. This is a known shortcoming of c. 1995 Honda Civics. Watch the gage especially on turns. Going one way will usually cause the needle to rise a bit. Going the other will cause it to drop.

More serious malfucntions do occur, though. In which case either the meter at the dash needs replacement or the fuel sending unit in the tank (not hard to get to on my Civics) needs replacement.

I would monitor it for awhile before changing either out. Keep a small tank of gas in the trunk, ready. :-)

^^ the gas light will come on, befor you are any where near runing out of gas,
some pople say 1 gallon some say more, but you should have at least 15+ miles from the time the light comes on and you run out...
i normally fill up just befor or at the red line.
but if its huge differences like you fill up and its sayig you have 1/2, plan on a sending unit, (they are like 60 form honda, and pretty straight forward to put them in)
