Icon6 1998 Honda Accord Brake Problem

I have a 1998 Honda Accord and i am having troubles with the front bakes sticking on intermittently after driving about 10mins. If I stop for awhile it seems to drive well again for several minutes then the vibration through the steering column becomes bad again. The front right wheel is hotter than the left. Replaced calipers, rotors, and pads, no better. This all started happening the same weekend that I had a short in my horn that was blowing a fuse and causing the car to not be able to be shifted out of park. Any ideas?? Very strange this has all happened at once, any chance it could be connected to my electrical prob??

I was all set to blame the traction control system until i remembered it wasn't available until the 2001 V6 Accord. Duh!
So now I'm thinking the ABS system; the poor cousin to the later TCS.

Thanks for your thoughts...i have been reading conflicting things on the possibility of ABS module problem. Some say that it only causes brakes to release? One other option that I thought it might be are the brake flex lines? Has anyone heard of this being a cause? I just replaced the brake switch and DRL module as well.

I just got hosed at the dealership...for 800 to fix the horn and replace one caliper...charged 2.5 hrs labour just for the caliper. I had a family friend mechanic do the rest of the brake work...dealer wanted 1500 just to do rotors and pads. Needless to say I would like to do all the troubleshooting I can.

Ok, now you've confused me. On your very first post you mentioned that you replaced the "Calipers".

Which was it? then, Now or both?

I have replaced all rotors, calipers and pads...dealer only did the "worst" caliper so they said, then I had it towed from dealer to a friend's place to get the rest of the brake work done.

I was initially taking it to the dealer b/c of the shift-lock problem and on the way there the vibration started. Dealer said the vibration was from the "pads not moving freely"...??? Seems very curious to me that both front sets would go at the same time. And since replacing them the problem is still there.

I should mention that I am a young lady in my early 20's with very little experience with this stuff...but I'm trying to learn all I can. I read through the manual and figured that the shifting prob might be the brake switch and I replaced it myself and I had some other small electrical issues that sounded like the DRL module and I did that myself too last weekend. But now this vibration in the steering column is beyond me but i thought I could get some ideas from this forum b/c my mechanic friend is also at a loss.

Very impressive of your knowledge so far. Have your mechanic friend check the ball joint, if it turns out to be the ball joint, get a Honda part; aftermarket ones sometimes aren't good out of the box.

Thanks!
Do you think a ball joint would cause the wheel to get really hot, and smell like something's burning?

The ball joint may be causing the vibration. Do you get the vibration even without braking?

The wheel getting hot and having a burning smell may still have something to do with the braking system.

Go down to post # 4 in the following link, I wonder whether your problem may be similar:

Thanks for the link...I checked it out and it does sound similar and I will definitely have my mechanic look into the ball joint being a possibility. The only thing different for my car than in the probs described in the link you sent is that my vibration occurs both when I'm not pressing the brake and when I am as well. Also, the vibration is there at high and low speeds. Just driving slow in a parking lot the car just wants to stop. When I let my foot off the gas the car comes to a stop. I have noticed others describing problems that sound very much like mine on some other forums but the threads don't show what was done to resolve the prob :-(

I am thinking that a worn ball joint may possibly be causing the vibration problem (braking or not). Kind of strange that the car wants to stop at low speeds when the gas pedal is not pressed.

It sounds like there is still a problem with the calipers.

I took the car back in to Honda dealer this morning. It drove there fine at hwy and city speeds, no probs....but when the dealer put it up on the hoist, they said none of the tires were moving freely...all are seizing but the calipers are good. Dealer has spent several hours on it so far and still have no answer. I'll keep you posted.

If the calipers are good for sure, you may want to look into checking to make sure there is nothing clogging the proportioning valve, or any of the lines, it may not be allowing the brake fluid to drain back out of the caliper. I have seen this once before. This can cause a caliper to drag. But looking now at the last post about all 4 wheels it makes me think that the Vacuum Booster or master cyl. is bad.
