Default i got a question for the K20A2 motor about redline

ok so heres my story im building my head im putting skunk2 stage 2 cams with skunk2 pro series camgears, skunk2 pro series valve springs with buddy club retainers. my mechanic seems to know what hes doing but he told me one thing i need he said i need to put stronger bolts on my rods if im gonna be going stage 2 cams cause of the torque he said that most honda motors tend to mess up cause those end up getting loose cause of the torque from the built head is this true? and is there anything else i will need if im gonna get this done let me know thanks

sorry but honda's don't make torque. Nor on just cams will you make enough power to worry. Turbo guys run 300+ hp on stock internals.

no, only reason for a new fuel rail is for the return system. Again mostly turbo guys do this. You'll be fine, bigger injectors though

It's not due to torque. The torque produced by the engine remains fairly constant throughout its useful rev range; a 2.0L engine is going to produce anywhere from 115 to 155 lb-ft of torque, but realistically nothing more. Cams don't produce more torque, but rather dictate where that torque will be located in the rev range (which determines horsepower).

Rod bolts stretch due to the forces generated by the pistons changing direction at speeds well above what they were intended to. Thus, if you're revving the engine well beyond its original rev range with cams that make power at even higher RPM, a built valvetrain, and more airflow, you risk overstressing the bottom end and stretching the rod bolts. Then you'll spin rod bearings. This is why LS-VTEC engines with stock bottom ends will spin rod bearings after several thousand miles of revving above 8000 RPM if the rod bolts haven't been upgraded.

Now, I don't know the history of K20A2 rod bolts or what sort of RPM they can safely handle; you may or may not need to upgrade them. Just wanted to clear some things up.

Apparently the rods are a weak point of these engines, because I recall a lot of rod failures years ago on the first K-series Honda Challenge cars.

oh seriously? dang well i will change the bolts then cause i think 50 dollars or so for those bolts is well worth not messing up the bottom of the engine than paying those thousands to repair or buy a new one

the block can handle that no problem.. the rods arent going to agree with 9k all the time tho.. i would use eagle or similar rods and rock it out. or if your cheap and want to take a chance just order up some rod bolts from arp.

you can rev up to 8,700 safely.

if you want to build a motor, do the k24 build, they average at 200pounds of torque and is very promising hp numbers. I dont know bout other most rsx owners but im quite satisfied with kpro'd k20a2 with bolt ons.

damn from what i heard is that the stock head can handle more than 83000 rpm but thats the 02-04 i know K-Pro takes it to like 86000 but i have gone to places and they said the stock head can't handle that high or rpm range
