What car/engine? Swapped? OBD conversion? Different gauge cluster?

What is the problem?

There is one screw a 10 mm one that, holds the VSS onto the tranny. All you need to do is remove that one screw and then pull the VSS off of the tranny.

If you have small Japanese size arms you should be able to pull it out from the back center of the motor on top of the tranny. Difficult to get back there, but once its out, make sure to start by installing the part of cable vss that plugs into the tranny first. There is a pin that is used to secure it to the tranny, maybe your bad vehicle speed sensor is stuck on it? I use the pin if I have it, if I don't than its whatev. Works without it.

So just pull your cluster and feed the vss through the firewall and into the engine where it will mount into the tranny. A trick I use to make sure its in the tranny prior to putting cluster back in is I drive the car w/o the cluster and see if the inner wire of the vss revolves. If it does than your straight. If not then just mess w/ it and you should be able to figure out that the wire can be easily pulled out and if its used and actually broken.

Once installed correctly your CEL should be gone if nothing else wrong w/ the car.

Confusing terms.
The way it works on our stock USDM EDs is by a speedometer gear (speed sensor assembly), speedometer cable, and a cluster mounted speed pulser.

Newer cars adn JDM don't have the cable drive. Instead they speed pulser integrated into the speedometer gear and it's called a VSS.

Sounds like you need a new speedometer cable. If you trace the cable down to the tranny in your engine compartment you will find where it plugs into the gear on the tranny. Feel around on the gear housing and you will find a wire C clip. Pop the clip out and the cable will easily pull out.
Remove the gauge cluster and disconnect the cable from the pulser. As I remember, There are a couple clips that hold the cable to the firewall behind the dash. I can't remember if I had to remove anything else to get to them - I don't think I did. Pull the old cable through to the engine compartment. You may want to tie some string on it first then you can just tie to the new cable and pul it through.
