does anyone know what transmission this most likely is? I bought it from someone and he said it was a GSR. It says Y80 on it.

 

My GSR does 4k at 80mph. Not sure that helps, but there's a big difference in the gearing from 3.5k to 4k at the same speed. What size tires are you running?? I have different rims than were stock on my GSR, but i kept the overall diameter the same; therefore, the gearing should be almost identical to stock.

If i had to guess, you have an LS tranny or an LS final drive in a GSR tranny...

 

its an ls motor in my eg hatch with 15" wheels. i really hope its not an ls trans. paid $550 for it and it grinds 2nd and 3rd!

sure did. i was told that it had low miles and everything was coo on it. so i called dude back and told him wus up and he said i need gsr shift linkage. im running ls shift linkage right now. he was full of shyt

 

You bought a ls tranny. The gsr/ls shift linkage are the same for eg/dc chasis. oh and by the way ls final drive is the same as the gsr.

Doubt it's a GS-R, unless it's got some weird final drive and fifth gear. I'm at about 3000 rpm at about 60 mph with my LS with GS-R tranny.

 

i have an 01 LS. it spins at ~3.5k rpms @ 80 mphs. 3k @ 70 mph....

 

BINGO - OP has an LS tranny for sure.

GS-R tranny goes like this in 5th gear:

2000 rpm = 40 mph
2500 rpm = 50 mph
3000 rpm = 60 mph
3500 rpm = 70 mph
4000 rpm = 80 mph (all speeds approximate of course)

Oh, and tire size has ZERO effect on what the guage cluster reports as speed vs. RPM. Speed is read as a function of the differential's rpm, so speed will always be the same at a given RPM given the same speed sensor gear on the diffy. Whether or not that reported speed is accurate is another story altogether.

if you drove both gsr and ls you should know the difference in 3rd and 4th gear between them two

it is. people have put ls 5th gear in gsr trannies before. the op should test other gears and post them on here.

Deffinatly a LS tranny. I had a GSR tranny in my eg hatch and it was at around 3500 at 70-75 mph.

 

Must be nice with long 5th gears. Mine at 100ks (62mph) 4200rpm in 5th. 4.9FD .

I would defently get in contact with that guy and get your money back, If he refuses get in contact with police. Iv been scammed with a transmission and It really sucks but I left it too long to be able to get my money back.

 

thats the thing. i dont have his number anymore and i forgot where he lives. i started a post asking if anyone would know this guy. and its been over 2 months easily.

 

I just had a GSR Y80 tranny put in b20V teg and at 60mph = 3k
and my other LS at 60mph = 2.6k
