Icon3 New here young kid, Project question

Hey, I am gonna make this my introduction thread too~

Hi there I am new here, my name is Tyler. I am 14 years old soon to be 15. I am big into Honda's and 240's... I know a lot on both cars I help my bro built his civic. I will be on here a lot lol. So I hope I am welcome

Now my question is I want to start a project (MAYBE) a Honda. What my question is should I wait until I am older and buy a car with all the money I saved up or should I buy one now and work on it until I can drive?

Each person that will respond to your thread is going to have a different response. But first allow me to welcome you to Honda-Tech. A lot of the information if not all are member submitted. So if you are ever in the need for information please use the search feature. But as for your project I recommend that you come up with an idea of your goals for your car and look through the site at other people's builds. This can help you get an understanding of what you can expect from your car and where you want your project to go.

Welcome.

If you never do it, you won't learn it. I realize you said that you helped your brother. However, there is still a lot to learn.

I would recommend saving for a decent car, and going from there. When you are young, money is always an issue with an expensive hobby as this. Take your time, plan things right, and enjoy your car. As always, if you plan to "build" a car, then spend lots of time learning how to protect it. Honda's are a huge red X for thieves. Don't sink thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours into something that is going to sit on the street every night. In my signature is a great link about car security.

The very best advice I can give you is to do research. Learn as much as possible.

im going to tell you now you are young. i am young as well(19) but you need to keep saving if your parents will sign the papers for you to get a car. i guarantee you will get into trouble because you are going to be so tempted to drive it. and if the police pull you over because your tail light is out and see you dont have a license you will be screwed.

save your money and wait till you are close to 16 or just wait untill you come across a good deal. what did your bro have and what did he build.

You are in a good position right now because you can't drive yet...So in other words, you have time to research and learn BEFORE you screw up on your car. Make a plan. Because you are young and probably don't have a whole lot of money I would recommend you get a 92-95 civic because they are cheap and you can do a lot with them. Do more searching around on here and figure out what you want to do with this car, and then find yourself a clean, stock, strong-running civic. If you end up buying some mess that some other guy screwed with, you will end up frustrated trying to fix his problems with minimal knowledge. And as stated before, security is the absolute first thing you do to that car unless you don't want to keep it. Search "stolen" in these threads so you can get an understanding of what security does not work and why.

im only 19 and i got my first honda when i was 15 and i took that thing so many times

save wait and look for 1 when you can drive it then buy it.
talk to your brother and see if he knows of good but cheap cars. and go for it.

In your situation I'd say save for a decent EG or EK. They're cheap on parts, lots of info out there, and they're priced very reasonably. It's cool to have dreams on a car but honestly, you need something reliable and good on gas at your age, not something fast. Something fast will get you into trouble fast at that age. Also, don't turn your daily driver into a project that sits in the driveway torn apart. Limit yourself to jobs you can accomplish over a weekend or a couple hours at night when you're not working or at school.

Yea, I made this mistake a few times with my first car. Would start doing something to find out I didn't have the right parts or was missing something and would have to bum a ride to school the next day. It can be a pain to ask friends for a ride when you know it's something that shouldn't have happened because of poor planning. I learned from it though at least.

This reminds me of another good point. Don't be an idiot and think your vehicle is invincible. A stock Civic is not that fast, doesn't brake that well, will not do well offroad (nor will a Bronco without 4wd, don't ask) and I totally agree with Honda Guy, it sucks asking for help when you know you screwed up.

Save your money, do some research and just look at what is for sale to get an idea of what's a good deal.

its always a good thing to have two cars. so when you F** up your project car. your daily driver car can still take you places.

Exactly. Don't go beating the **** out of it because it's not going to last. I beat the **** out of my first car when I was 16 and blew up 3 motors in it before I finally got the point. To this day I don't beat on a single car that I drive. I've learned from my mistakes the hard way.
