outwards. the flat side should be against the crank cap

ok thanks. the book said that too but my buddy that builds engines said its inward. i put it inward. So i need to flip them so the 2 groove part rubs against the crankshaft?

precisely. its done that way for oil transfer. my buddy is completely rebuilding his 3sge toyota engine and i was with him not even two days ago while he was putting his bottom end together. i made a mental note of how the thrust washers face, among other things, just in case i decide to actually do an engine build one of these days lol.

NO! You just said 2 completely different things in one post. The flat part goes against the crank. Outwards means that the grooves face away from the crank. Inwards would mean that the grooved side touches the crank.

That would be incorrect. whats so difficult about this. as i said before the flat sides faces inwards towards the crank cap and eachother. if you want to grenade your engine do it the other way.

good to hear also be sure to plastigage the rod and crank caps. make sure the piston rings go in the right way, and are facing right side up. and check the gap on them before installing on the pistons by placing the rings individually into each cylinder bore and measuring the gap with a feeler gauge. also don't forget to clock the rings properly.

you may already know all this, but i reckon it cant hurt to share the info just in case its needed. i assume you have also honed the cylinder walls correct?

its bored and honed. the rings were pre gapped with the pistons i got. i saw a video on youtube about which size ring goes in which spot but i didnt no rings have a top and down side to them? they all look the same... i didnt use a gauge because the rings were for the pistons. no customizing the rings or nothing

In most cases either the top and/or bottom compression ring will have a designated top side. Generally it will say top, t, or have a dimple indentation on the ring itself indicating which side is up. For some applications the rings can go in either way but it is important to check. there are many types of ring cuts and because of how they are tapered its very important that the right side is up.

here's a pic showing the different types
