Default How do I make my car look like this?

Hi guys,

Just got an 00 Hatch. I have a question about the grille/lip. I know this **** must get asked all the time so I apologize, but it's very hard to do a search for this kind of info.

Pic

I want to make my front end look like this..

The grille... is this just an "Si" grille? When I searched on ebay and whatnot, 90% of the stuff that came up is "Type R" grille. Is that the same thing. Is something like this ad here what I want or is this some cheap knock off? And I would have to paint it myself, right?

http://cgi.ebay.ca/99-00-HONDA-CIVIC...3A1|240%3A1318

Also, the lip, is just an SI lip from what I gather... but would it clip onto my non-si bumper if I buy one? Or do I have to buy a whole new Si bumper?

Those are my main questions, but while we're here...

Are those headlights the same as mine? They look slightly more badass but it may just be the pic.

And, are there OEM skirts I can buy which look like the Si skirts? Since the hatch obviously didn't come in Si form I wasn't sure about this.

Thanks!

PS. I wonder if I can paint the moldings/mirrors body color and pull it off? hmm..

"Si" (or Canadian "SiR") grill is very similar to the Type R grill, but the Si and SiR have removeable badges. The Si(R) or Type R lip will fit your bumper, as well. When ordering, make sure you get 99-00, since 96-98 front ends are different.

https://honda-tech.com/forums/paint-body-84/%2A%2A%2Adiy-painting-%22ek%22-sideskirts-ctr-style-grill%2A%2A%2A-2026611/
This link will help you paint your new grill and your sideskirts, and similar techniques will work for the moldings and mirrors, as well.

Good luck

Why would the owner of that EM1 remove his stock Si(R) lip, and replace it with a Type R lip that looks identical...?

That is either an Si grille or a '99-'00 Civic Type R grille. Be careful not to get a fake grille. Some people take stock US Civic grilles and cut out the inside and insert mesh. The mesh can come loose and the end product does not look as nice up close.

As for the lip, that is an OE optional '99-'00 front lip. It came standard on the Civic Si and the Civic Type R. You can find them online for sale, but again, watch out for replicas. They can fit poorly or be too big in their features. OEM parts just fit much better and stand up better. Your car will look much better without replica parts.

All '99-'00 Civic coupe, hatch and sedan front bumpers are exactly the same. The Si front bumper is no different.

The lip will fit on your bumper with no modification.

The headlights are the same. Clean yours up and take photos in similar lighting and yours will look the same.

There are how-tos on cleaning headlights out there. SIRIUS made a great DIY, which I know is posted on ClubCivic and possibly other sites.

The sideskirts are the same on all '96-'00 coupes and hatches. Sedans are almost the same, but the top edge (hidden under the car) is a bit bigger so that when you open the rear doors you won't see a gap looking back at you. Paint your sideskirts and they will look the same.

Of course you can pull off painted trim, mirrors and license plate garnish. I recommend you find the parts you want (grille and lip) and then look for a business who will professionally repaint your parts all at the same time. Your best bet is to leave your car there so everything will match as best as possible.

Spray paint can end up not looking so good. It can look darker or duller than the stock finish.

A lot of the parts you are looking for can be found used in the Honda-Tech MarketPlace. eBay mostly has fake parts, but if you know exactly what to look for you can find the real deal stuff. I recommend you buy locally from salvage yards and private sellers and from people on Honda-Tech (it's better to buy from dedicated members).

SiR front grill is two pieces, SiR lip requires all the mounting hardware. Don't expect any of it to be cheap. Silver isn't available in the states for the Si's, but I'm sure you can get all the painted SiR pieces from the dealer.

The OP is in Canada.

The parts might as well be purchased used and repainted to match. Some of these parts, like the lip, are discontinued.

Btw, OP:

Si (US) coupe = SiR (Canadian) coupe
B16A2 (1.6L DOHC VTEC)

EX (US) coupe = Si (Canadian) coupe
D16Y8 (1.6L SOHC VTEC)

I know the diff between the SiR and the Si.... Silver was not available on the Si in the states, which is why I noted the difference. I bought my USDM FBP lip last January, didn't think they'd discontinued the Silver CDM lip already. Sorry!

It would be cheaper and easier to find the parts used and then paint them.

There really is no reason to not buy these parts used. It's not something that wears out. As long as he checks them out before and makes sure they're not broken, they'll be fine.

Also, the Si/SiR, EX/Si stuff I mentioned was for the OP, not you.

Fair enough... but where can you find a 9-10 year old OEM lip thats not messed up? Probably better luck to find used silver stuff in Canada than in the states I suppose!

I got one (BNIB). But mine's a little older, was never standard on any Civic and was only available in the US for one year.

The '99-'00 lips and Si grilles pop up on here for sale on a fairly regular occurrence.

Lucky! My BNIB came straight from Honda with a hefty price tag. I think between the lip, the lip mounting hardware, the grill, and the colored molding around the grill, it must have been close to $500 all from Honda. So yeah, used would be cheaper!!

That's how much my lip cost by itself. Fits like a glove though.

There's a reason why NOFX and I myself both love OEM parts. They ALWAYS fit and are ALWAYS of the highest quality when compared to aftermarket replacements. The little extra you pay for them goes a long way, especially when dealing with body panels.

Oh, and before I scare the OP (original poster, aka. the guy who started the thread), the cost of my lip is NOT normal for OE lips.

I have a different OE lip than the one you're looking for. Mine won't even fit yours since it's for a different style front end.

I would expect to pay $200-300 (on the high end)for a used OE '99-'00 (aka. "Si") lip. At least that's what I remember seeing them for in the past.

Btw, Nickster, these lips were optional parts for all '99-'00 Civic coupe trims in the US too. So yes, they came in silver in the US.

The grille can be from an Si or from a Type R. They do have different grilles, but just barely. My understanding is one has like two fewer holes in the mesh.

Lip hardware from Honda is something like $90, and it can rust. People on here could help you figure out what stainless hardware to get from the local hardware store if you need help.

He will probably have better luck finding a used one though.

Wow, thanks so much everyone for the responses. Lots of great info.

NOFX, interesting info that the hatch and coupe have the same size skirts, didn't realize that. It also seems like the skirt on that SiR is actually the same as mine, but painted? I thought I would need new skirts, so this is great. I may just trying a DIY project to paint mine . Probably like 20 bucks in supplies and it would look much better. And if it turns out bad I can always take it somewhere to get it painted when I get the lip(s) and grille.

dont forget the foglights too, those can add some appeal to the front end
and helps alot in night time driving...also while painting your lip and grill
spray up your side view mirrors..

Do a search for a silver Civic Type R. And make it look exactly like that. That's the look you want to go for. The most expensive pieces to that look would probably be the real deal CTR headlights, and the 5 lug conversion and wheels if you decided to go that route (you should). Everything else such as the grill and bumpers are pretty inexpensive. Also get your side moldings and mirrors color patched. Then you're all set. Keep in mind that you have the later model EK front bumper which is a major major plus. Good pick up!

I don't believe "it's just the internet" is any sort of viable excuse. I believe that's just an excuse to be rude to people. So I'm still polite (by and large), even over the internet.

If nobody helped anyone here there would be no use for this website.

Sometimes, people are misunderstood over the internet because we communicate in text. Body language and tone-of-voice are not seen and heard, so people may come across "meaner" than they actually are. I have been called-out by several members for this very reason, so I have learned to be careful with my choice of words and the way I may come across to people.

To be honest, comments like this make me annoyed. It's like we all need to put "lol" or "haha" after each sentence so sensitive people don't get the wrong idea. I'm not criticizing you, in particular, but since you asked, I answered.
