Q. What filler material do I use?
A. Although there are several good filler materials, ER80S-D2, is one you should consider. This filler material is capable of producing welds that approximate the strength of 4130. ER-70S-2 is an acceptable alternative to ER80S-D2, as is ER70S-6, although the weld strength will be slightly lower.

Q. When I use ER70S-2 filler material, do I give up strength for elongation?
A. Yes. The filler material, when diluted with the parent material, will typically undermatch the 4130. However, with the proper joint design (such as cluster or gusset, for example), the cross-sectional area and linear inches of weld can compensate for the reduced weld deposit strength.

Q. Why is 4130 filler metal not recommended?
A. 4130 filler typically is used for applications where the weld will be heat treated. Due to its higher hardness and reduced elongation, it is not recommended for sporting applications such as experimental airplanes, race car frames, roll cages, etc.

Q. Can I weld 4130 using any other filler metals?
A. Some fabricators prefer to use austenitic stainless steel fillers to weld 4130 tubing. This is acceptable provided 310 or 312 stainless steel fillers are used. Other stainless steel fillers can cause cracking. Stainless filler material is typically more expensive.

Q. Do I need to heat treat (stress relieve) 4130 after welding?
A. Thin wall tubing normally does not require stress relief. For parts thicker than .120", stress-relieving is recommended and 1,100ºF is the optimum temperature for tubing applications. An Oxy/Acetylene torch with neutral flame can be used. It should be oscillated to avoid hot spots.

Make sure you have good fits. Take a torch and just take the chill out of the tubing. Especially in the winter you will find as soon as you go near it that you'll tend to see a bit of condensation that will form and this will be a problem. Like I said just warm to the touch works to get rid of it. Use 3/32 2% tungsten and I never use anything but 70s2 filler wire.
Make sure your fits are good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! also grind back the sharp ends you get when you fish mouth the tubing. I usually grind them until I am at least 90% back to full thickness.

Been using er70s2 since the 70's. It is the only steel filler wire I allow in the shop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

These are suggestions and its your decision to use or not to.

Your new to TIG and you honestly picked a chromoly cage project to start off w/??

I'd be getting some practice and experience on something much easier and less dangerous before attempting this task.

It is a very high quality mild steel rod. Steel or cm it works. Like I said nothing else is allowed in the shop as a steel wire.

Do some real practice making fits and welding them in position and then out of position till you really know how to do it before you try and weld in a cage. Once you get really good you can do it withthe machine preset. For starters or really difficult spots you can usually find a way to work the pedal. There are many times I work it with the front back or eother side of my knee. Hard to work a pedal laying down. I only use the pedal if I am working where I there allot of different material thicknesses or diameters ootherwise I just preset and go.

There is some pretty bad undercutting and your start and stops are obvious but at lest you didn't cook it don't rush it take your time and use filler

Why do I hear people say this, it welds just fine to me, I never had any weird issues as long as is prepped right.

I agree, it welds very nicely if you prep it right.

Maybe people aren't venting them properly when closing up the gap.

How do you vent when closing a gap? On a cage, once the piece is welded on one side, how would you setup a backpurge?
