There's a good chance my wife is gonna give her 98 GSR DC2 after she gets another car to drive. Anyways the car has been wrecked and the check wont cover the damages, so we're thinking we will just strip down and part out. of course Ill get the pick of litter!!!
My real question is I dont have a lot of money to spend would it be ok to do a mild tear down and just re-ring & put new bearings in the bottom end without spending a ton of money at a machine shop, along with new gaskets and some ARP headstuds. Would I have to hone the cylinder walls before the rings

I could buy 1 at the local parts store or Sears and do it myself I just have to make sure I use clean oil and the crosshatch looks GOOD
if you do it yourself make sure to not hold dwell the hone in one area for very long as this will cause a uneven cylinder wall, tapered, whatever you would like to call it. therefore the ring gap would change dynamicially as the piston moves up and down.
when you select your bearings make sure you read the color chart right do not just throw some bearings in there.
if your colors are all close to green or yellow you can pick up some ACL greens for cheap.
it would be a good selling point if you replaced them yes but do you have confidence you can hone the cylinder walls correctly?

brown and yellow are on opposite sides of green. So any of the 3 colors are only gonna be 0.003 inch apart from each other.
Get a dingleberry but make sure you get one the right size close but little bigger than your bores which iirc is around 3.1 inches (81mm)
If you motor has factory crosshatches showing then you basically are just going for a deglazing process and keep the factory crosshatches.
let motor idle until at operating temps and then take it through the rpm range to help seat rings.
