What is this engine/car?
So I bought a car from a guy and I was told it was an 86 civic, but I am now not so sure it is actually an 86, and not sure of the model. I have no experience with Honda. After searching the internet for some time trying to find pictures of this engine I did not find anything. Can anyone help identify it? There is a VIN plate on the dash, but it is not visible. I was told there should be some kind of stamp on the engine that would identify it, but I dont know where too look, it is very dirty, and its been too cold to stay out in the unheated garage for very long to clean it up. If nobody knows what it is, can you tell me where to look to find another vin plate or some other identification codes?
its a d15b2 from an 88-91 civic dx or lx. look on the front of the block straight below the upper rad hose neck. there is a flat spot that will have the engine code on it. also look on your door jambs for the VIN. the 7th to last digit is the year. J=88,K=89,L=90,M=91. good luck
I will see if I can clean off the block a little when it is warmer out(-4 right now). The car was crashed in a race last year and the power steering pump was damaged so it spewed PS fluid all over the engine bay and got everything sticky and dirty. The windshield is lexan(or some other type of polycarbonate) and the bottom 6-8" of it is painted so it covers the dash VIN plate. The drivers door is welded shut, so I wont be able to look at the door jamb, unless the info in on the passenger side as well, but I haven't seen that on many cars. Might have to wait until I take the windshield out to check the year.
Anyway, thanks for replying so quickly.

That is not an 86. It's probably an 88, but it could be an 88-91. It is either a D15B1 or D15B2, depending on if it's an STD or DX trim level, respectively. STD has ~70hp, DX has ~90.

Sorry, I don't have pics right now, but will get some soon. It is nothing special, I will be racing in stock class in circle track, and due to the modifications for circle track will be bumped up to M2(2-wheel drive, full rally modifications allowed) rally cross class. It is a black car(not sure of original color, but it wasn't black. It has blue flames on the front and the previous owners sponsors painted on it. Not sure if I will get a chance to paint anytime soon.

It is a race car, and not street legal. It does not have a title.

Haha, yeah, I have not said it was a fast race car, but it is a race car none the less. I don't expect to win a race, or even finish in a podium position. It is cheap fun more than anything else, until I can afford a "real" race car, a rally car. I picked it up for $275 in drivable condition, with a roll cage installed. All it really needs to be race ready is a seat, harness and figure out what to do with the power steering hoses.
Its not how much power you have. It is how you use it.
There are a couple more pics of it here. http://picasaweb.google.com/jbjerke/
If you haven't figure this one out yet....
Grab a piece cloth, a paper, whatever and rub the dirt off the place I circled in red in the attached picture. Your engine number will miraculously appear... Seriously. Then let us know...

LOL WTF - you're going to "guess" it's a DX, not because of the lowly DPFI engine you can clearly see, but because you can see an "ac line"??? lol lol classic honda-tech.
why on earth would someone put a roll cage in that car? yes obviously its a D series.
Dude, you are seriously uneducated when it comes to hondas or you are just messing with us for whatever reason. POST PIX OF THE ENTIRE CAR! how do you not know what type of car it is?
Look at your car....then hunt for one that looks like it....then look at the emblems then BAM...you have your car!

Wow, talk about getting ripped on for trying to have some cheap fun in the summer.
Why does it matter to you what car or motor I race?
Why do you care that someone put a roll bar in this car?
Sorry for asking such a stupid question. Shame on me for not knowing that this is obviously a D series.
Stupid me...there is an AC line in the picture, it must be a DX. LOL.
Stevew84 - Believe me, I tried looking this up before posting. The car has no bumper covers, no glass, no emblems, no interior, no grille, no headlights, no taillights, and is beat to hell.
I did put some more pics in the album linked above if anyone really cares that much.
Anyway, time to put this thread to bed.
The engine is a D15B2, and the car is a 1989 LX. I found the Vin on the firewall.
