I used WD-40 and a scotch brite pad.

I also used ACL Duraglide bearings from Rocket. I'll be plastigaging tonight to get clearances.

I thought you had to plastigage to determine what size bearings you need?

You do...but, the ACL Duraglides are a "one size fits all" type of bearing. They are roughly in the middle of the bearing chart.

That's the chart for my engine. The Duraglides are supposed to be roughly equivalent to something like a green bearing. I'll find out tonight.

Is there anything you can do if you fall out of the range?

I know you can mix in an OEM bearing if needed to bring a clearance within spec.

Thats my main concern. I want to get it right the first time and not have to waste time ordering/waiting for parts like these.

couldn't you theoretically measure each journal on the crank and its coresponding journal on the block and then subtract the crank's size from the block journal size, then subtract twice the bearing clearance you want and then divide the remaining number by two to find out the exact thickness of the bearing that you need? I think earl mentioned this plastigauge would be a good idea to check your math skills but it seems fool proof this way. its just a bit more work

Yes this is true. But where can I find the bearing thickness for each color, and also the thickness for the ACL's? I have calipers and bore gauges, everything needed to measure them.

I had my crank reground and new bearings similar to the ACL's...The clearance came in at .38 on all the rod bearings...I forgot what my main bearings came in at, but they were in spec.

You need a bearing mic to measure correctly. Same as a regular mic but one end is round to fit the curve of the bearing.

Slow..if your rod clearance is .38, that motor will clang louder than the Bells of St. Mary.

are you sure? My helm Manual said that .38 is in spec for a b18b

.38 is almost 4 tenths of an inch. i think you may have misplaced a zero

Haven't built a Honda shortblock yet, but...

Typically what you do is this....take the crank to a machine shop, if it's good, you use stock bearings. Otherwise, they'll grind it....10 under, 20 under, etc. Then you buy the corresponding bearings.

Been about 8 years since I built my last engine, but it's starting to come back to me now

well, IMO ACL are a good alternative to stock OEM bearings, they fall within the specs of the OEM and the service limit...

I'd use OEM bearing, if they were not backordered forever...
I need 4 green and a yellow for main bearing, 3 green and a brown for rod bearing..

all yellow and brown are in backordered indefinitely... F#$k that, I'll get ACL from Mike and Earl...
