hack job suspension questions...
hey all just bought a 89 civic dx that im not too sure what the guy was trying to accomplish but he put a set of Tokico(?) coilovers on the front to lower it but in the process of doing so screwed the alignment all up. the car jerks really hard to the right if i barely let go of the steering wheel, and the camber is way off. I was looking at adjustable camber kits but don't know what they mean by eccentric bolts. i know i need to fix the camber before getting an alignment done but not sure where to start. im new to working on hondas so any help would be greatly appreciated
Dont worry about the camber, just get the car to a reasonable height (I suggest lining up the top of the tire with the fender as a minimum), then get the toe set to zero. As long as the toe is zero, and the height is reasonable, a little negative camber will not cause problems.
you dont need a camber kit. If you feel like you want new upper ball joints just get OEM control arms. As for alignment you need to set the height as suggested. Pick a moderate height that allows you enough ground clearance to avoid stuff. Once you have the height you want get the front camber set to -1 to -2 or so is a good street amount. Toe at 0. Toe is what wears tires mostly. rear camber can be -.5 to -1.5. Any more than these amounts is probably overkill.
we have no other information other than your an alignment is off.
yes, if the alignment was DRASTICALLY off, it would cause what youre saying.
WHY its off so much, we dont know. but someone who actually can examine the car can help see if anything is obviously wrong with the car. and at the end of the alignment, you get a printout. then you can share those numbers and we'll have some more info to go with.
but until theres any more info about that car, just get an alignment.

any car that the struts are pulled off of need alignment. bad things can happen. i did it in my 94 civic. my ish was slammed on skunk coilovers, front and back the whole way. drove it for a while and the axle pulled out while hitting a pot hole one day. its not just honda's etiher, i've seen it happen on other makes/ models. get it aligned and it should be fine.
