I've heard that while the engine is out of the bay, powerwashing is good, but only if the engine is out.

I used alot of engine degreaser on the block. As for everything else I normally just use simply green.

I used pot and pan degreaser on my block and tranny while it was in the car, but beware it oxidized my aluminum parts. I sprayed it on waited 15 min, scrubbed the **** out of it and washed it off looked good as new.

Just don't use Goo b gone it leaves a nice shine for a while but just makes it all grimey and sticky. While your at it why not just paint it too?

I sprayed my entire engine with heavy duty degreaser and pressure washed it today(and a couple of months ago, and a couple months before that).

Works great.

Painting is a lot of work and time!

I'm doing it to my white '90 and it sucks, but should look good when it's done!

Well. When i did mine, i put a plastic bag over my Distributor and other misc electrical doo dads. Keep them dry. Then i sprayed Simple Green in it like there was no tomorrow. Waited about 15 minutes then went in with a brush. One thing people usually do it they'll start off in one area then after say they get it half way clean they'll start somewhere else. It's retarded. Doing that all you get is oily scrub marks everywhere looks like crap. So take your time and hit EVERYWHERE with the brush or atleast all the places to can get. Then blast it all out with a pressure washer. Another little thing, might want to keep your wheel wells clean too. Scrub those down too then wash them out. Dry then use some tire wet from Meguires (**** My Spelling) And trust me it looks great. Plus $500 bones for a Rex Si not bad a deal at all man great find.

LOL, you guys haven't tried the K&N cleaner on those parts before have ya. I cleaned my buddies mazda motor a while back. Yes it's expensive but it worked on those hard, gunked up carbon, dirt, dried up grease. You spray it on and leave it for 5-10min, then wash it. Your aluminum will shine. Make sure you dry it quick since it corrodes. BTW, the smell/fumes is toxic, so wear a mask and eye protection so it doesn't sting your eyes.

not to thread steal but, what about low grit sand paper after most of the grease is gone would it be worth it and what grit should be used if so?

well you would need a high grit sand paper, a low grit sandpaper is rougher but for just cleaning you engine bay ther is absolutely no need for sandpaper. Just get out there and get dirty SON!!!! we've all had to do it.
