Default All D series water pump the same?

I just wanted to know if all D series water pump are the same? Im worried that the guy at kragen may have given me a wrong water pump. I have a D15B7 engine and recently the water pump has gone bad. So I only wanted to replace that. But my question is the water pumps all compatible with one another? I heard only the D15 are compatible and not the D16z6 water pump. Well the water pump bolted right up but for some reason after installing the water pump the timing belt seems to be a bit tighter than I had it with the old water pump. Im not sure if it has an extra teeth or so on it making the belt tighter. It makes a really loud screeching sound when I start the car up and it starts to smoke real bad (like the timing belt is rubbing against something. Help?
