Default Water Pump Failure????

Folks, I am fairly new to the Honda world. Although I had an 86 Accord LXi about 13 years ago.....I have zero knowledge on this 97 EX Coupe. Car didn't run when I got it for free.99 from my mom and I have done SOME diagnostics and came up with this.....

- It DEFINITELY has a snapped timing belt
- water pump is likely bad (as ole ma-dukes said she believed it was gone.....she was a mechanic in the 70's and 80's....slightly qualified for SOME input....)
- I pulled the garbage timing belt out and it started pissing on the garage floor......and the belt was nice and wet with some rusty water.... I also noticed a lot of play in the water pump pulley as well, so that is getting replaced.

Here is my question.....based off of this pic, does it seem that the water pump failure could have caused this??????? I imagine that with the water pump going out, the water was hanging out in there and started growing some stuff (car is from FL and running only water rather than coolant is a pretty normal thing....especially for old guys like my step dad).

Is there any reason to be alarmed and have to dive further into a rebuild?????

Well the snapped belt on an interference motor means bad things probably happened. Check for bent valves and go from there.

I have thought about this very scenario. Is there a way to check the valves without taking the head off? I have turned the cam by hand and didn't hear or otherwise notice anything awry. Didn't sound like there was any friction or anything.....perhaps a good sign????

Look for rocker arms that are very loose when the cam is turned to the position that closes those valves.

A leakdown test can be done with no timing belt. Lock the crank into some position off of TDC and BDC (so no valves will hit) then rotate the cam to close the valves on the cylinder under test.

Awesome! I really appreciate it.

My last play cars have been '13 and '16 Veloster Turbos, '01 GTI, '02 IS300, and my old beater truck.....so this is all somewhat new to me and haven't really had a reason to address any of these issues. You guys are awesome! Thanks!

I have so many questions

-You were able to turn the cam by hand with the spark plugs still in?
-Did you happen to turn the cam without the belt installed?
-Did you buy this car not with the assumption of swapping the motor?
- I have a gates water pump in box for a 98 ex that should fit, would you like it?

-Did you happen to turn the cam without the belt installed? Yes, I got the car after the timing belt snapped (I was already prepared to redo the timing)
-Did you buy this car not with the assumption of swapping the motor? I got the car for free from my mom with the intent to just fix it for a daily and maybe swap it later down the road

IDK if I would've turned the cam without the belt on but it kinda already sounds like it's toast anyway.

It's OK to turn the cam without the belt on as long as none of the pistons are at TDC. When setting up an engine that doesn't have the belt on, the procedure is to have the crank about 90 degrees off of TDC, then TDC the cam, then bring the crank back to TDC-- without going through BDC, since that TDCs the other two pistons.

wow...that water pump has seen better days. I've seen better looking ones at the local salvage yard. Even though the car is from FL, I'm betting it was originally from up North. If the motor happens to be locked up, replace it.

doesn't appear to be locked up at all. All things considered, it seems to be in reasonably ok shape. I have a new head that I'm reconditioning from the ole junk yard. Trying to figure out how to get this damn carbon of the valves right now. I tore the head down (junkyard not mine) the other day and I'm going through and freshening it all up. Any tips?

Knock off any big chunks of carbon. You do not need to make it spotless, there is always going to be a layer of carbon during operation.
