Default really confuesed help!

ok for the last couple days i had this grinding noise coming from my driver side front tire. on my 94 civic dx. its not really loud just like humming but it dose sound like metal. you can really only hear it between 10 and 25 mph. i thought it was my wheel bearing but now someone tells me it probably my allignment. if this helps i just got a ball joint and axle replaced on that side last month. any ideas would be very helpfull i dont want to drive with this noise but i need my car.

is the brake shield hitting the rotor? also take a look at your tires to see if they are "feathered" or wearing incorrectly...if your alignment is so off that it's chewing the tires up, the edges of the tires could be making your noise

also a bad wheel bearing can start out as a faint hum and will get progressively louder until the wheel comes off...if nothing is hitting the rotor and you can't see any thing with a visual inspection get it to a mechanic and make sure its not a wheel bearing or something serious that is causing the noise

in my experience wheel bearings usually make the most noise at highway speeds, around 60+ but if your getting any vibration or a lot of noise at that speed then you need to get it checked out right away...it could be something as simple as a wheel weight fell off and you have an out of balance wheel, or you could have a tire that is ply seperated, either way you don't want to take any chances

also IMHO if it does turn out to be a wheel bearing, bite the bullet and replace them in pairs...ie both fronts or both rears

i cant hear it after 25 ish and the music has to be off and the heater down and off the throttle to ever hear it. no vibrations at any speed. ill take it all apart tomorrow and take a look at those things. i get an uneven tire wear anyways becuase of worn springs. they wear on the inside. but now i think about it. it did start up right about when i put new tires on

Check the torque on your hubs.

After I changed my axles and discovered that my torque wrench was no longer functioning so I had to guess how much torque I was applying, I had a horrible shreaking squill when driving slow and turning. Bought a new torque wrench and set it at 134ftlbs and the noise went away.

Later,
Michael

I was a little on the high side.

After I re-torqued, I had enough room on the nut to put a new notch next to the first one for the key slot.
