Default Mystery JDM motor, D15B plus serial number, pm9-6 head?

Okay, obviously I need to get some photos and more details, but I have been searching HT and the rest of the web for three days now trying to find out which engine I might have in the CRX HF I just bought.

Car is a 91, and I bought it needing a radiator, headlights, hood, windshield, and hatch glass. Starts right up though. Stock HF intake/ECU (intake for sure, looks untouched, haven't looked at the ECU or run the motor for more than 15 seconds yet)

Engine block reads: D15B 1030827

cylinder head reads: PM9-6

SOHC, non Vtec, spark plug holes in the back side, 16 valve motor.

I am DDing my brothers mini-me swapped 88 HF right now, and while I may be mistaken, I *think* that MY distributor (the one on this mystery engine) has no coil wire. At one point earlier today I was comparing the two and thought I noticed the coil wire missing on my car; only four wires to the dizzy.

The guy I bought it from told me that a PO had "swapped in a japanese used engine" and was under the impression it was mostly the same. My brother and I took one look at it and read "16 Valve" and new it wasn't the stock engine. So I have reason to believe this is a Japanese motor, even before I look at the stamp on the block.

Then the stamp on the block leaves me puzzled, with only a B after the D15.

the cylinder head code seems uber-rare, and alot of the signs I am getting are pointing at this being a JDM, non VTEC, 1.5L ZC??

What have I got here?

as I said before, obviously I need photos, I plan on bumping this thread in a day or two when I get a few. I just had to throw this out here to see if I got any bites while I was sleeping.

TIA

do you see a vtec solenoid on the back left portion of the head? sounds like it could be a d15b vtec or non-vtec motor. only way to tell is if we get some pics man. postem up asap and you will have your answer.

The cylinder head code is far from "uber rare". It's a regular non-VTEC 16v head. That engine is the equivilent of a D15B7. It's nothing special, really.

ZCs were 1.6l....and say ZC on the block.

Yah, I'm not thinking I have anything particularly special, just trying to sort through the information and misinformation I am finding on the web.

Its NOT a VTEC head. All I know for certain is what I lsted: 16V, SOHC, pm9-6 head casting, d15B plus serial number on block. The lack of special designation after the B is what has thrown me for a loop; my understanding is that any USDM D15B should have one or two more characters stamped there.

Will try to get some pics today.

Well, the guy did say it was a Japanese replacement. None of the Japanese motors have numbers at the end. For all we know, it could have been a dual-carb'd D15B.
