Default First auto-x today (8/4/02): My thoughts and questions

Okay, so auto-xing is the coolest thing this side of winning the lottery. Even though I did pretty bad, I had a lot of fun. At least I wasn't the slowest driver out there. But even if I had been, who cares?

Anyway, I need my car to handle better and I could use your thoughts and recommendations. I currently have AGX and GC coilovers with a 2000 Si front upper strut on my 93 Dx hatch. I also have stock steelies with crapco tires that squealed like a stuck pig from green to checkerd flag.

On my "things I need to spend my hard earned money on" list are the following:

15" rims (as light as possible i.e. Rota C8)
Much better tires (Kuhmo?)
Suspension
brakes
seat
harness

Recommend some particular items that fall into the above categories that would help me point my car more efficiently and might even be affordable. I'm considering a complete GSR brake and suspension swap followed by upgraded rotors and rear swaybar (itr, comptech, ?).

My driving could have been much better also. The excitment of the event circumvented my driving knowledge and abilities which resulted in an ugly display of understeer and generally erratic maneuvering.

**Cliff's Notes: Auto-x rocks. Driver needs to use brain. Car snowplows. Help.

Take my advice, only do one mod at a time. It will make it easier to spot your car's weaknesses and it will also give you more time to practice.

If I were you I would just get some better tires (I run Khumo Victoracers but for less money the Falkens would be a good idea). Run like this for at least one season. You will be amazed just how much the "car problems" like understeer etc are really "driver problems".

I have been auto-xing for 3 years now (sill learning) and I always look for the newbies that need help. Most of them say that thier car isnt good enough but I will get behind the wheel of thier car and make a good time. Take the time to get better before you go spending lots of cash on mods that you might not need.

BTW, I run a 2000 Civic Si in stock class with only the mods allowed by SCCA rules and I still get amoung the top 10 times at my events.

excately! before you go throwing money at your car make the driver better first! i recommend doing more events and playing with the psi in your street tires before getting ANY new parts. it's amazing how much difference a few psi (as well as drastic driving changes) can make! i'm throwing the tail of my STOCK eg around easily now.. it's all in the driving!! don't jump straight to an r compound tire.. sure it'll help you pull faster times but those tires can compensate for BAD driving. you should get to the point where you're outdriving your street tires before you upgrade to an r-comp. a few of my buddies are pushing me to get a set of r-comps but i know learning on my street tires is much more beficial to my driving.. the way i look at mods is get to the point where i'm outdriving my current setup and i NEED something to go faster, not just wanting that new something.. trust me man, more time behind the wheel will help you much more than a few new parts..

As the others said, first improve what's between the seat and the steering wheel. Then start modding the car. But if you are like most auto-x newbies and just can't resist modding the car... Instead of getting the 15" Rotas, Schmotas etc, get some Panasports at least 13x7 with some Kumhos 215-50-13 at least...

Have fun

I realize I need lots of practice. I just wish the events were more often.
