Tranny FLUID Level Questions ('92 AUTOMATIC Lude):
Alright guys, sorry if this sounds foolish, but I've never owned an automatic car before so I'm not sure is this is "normal" or if I have a problem...
I have an automatic '92 Prelude Si (H23 non-VTEC) and just recently put a "new" (35,000 miles) tranny in it. We weren't sure how much fluid it took so we only put in about 2.5 quarts of Honda ATF. The shifting was horrible so we immediately added more, and I think as of now it has 6.0-6.5 quarts of ATF in it.
Here's where it gets strange... when I drive the car around the shifting is usually perfect. After warming up the engine and the tranny and checking the tranny dipstick, it reads full right up to the line... perfect. When I put the dipstick back in however it reads absolutely nothing. I've repeated this several times with the car in both park, and neutral with the parking brake on, and get the same results.
So basically my questions are as follows:
1.) Is it normal to only get an accurate reading on the tranny dipstick after warming the tranny up? I'm under the impression that this is the case.
More importantly...
2.) Should the tranny dipstick only ready properly THE FIRST TIME checking it after driving it around?
3.) Would it do serious damage to the transmission or the engine of the car if it were to be overfilled with tranny fluid?
I'm just trying to make sure everything's proper before seriously driving the car. It's my daily and I don't need any problems with it. I also don't want to overfill the fluid and mess anything up...
Any help would be much appreciated. Again, sorry if these questions sound foolish, but now my Civic's down for the count and I need to get this thing rolling A.S.A.P. Thanks guys.

Most of the hondas of that era you check the automatic transmission with the engine off.

1. Yes, To get an accurate reading the engine must be at normal operating temperature and parked on level ground, and turned off. Selector in Park position is fine.
2. No, Should be the same each time.
3. Dont know if it will do damage if overfilled but i would keep checking fluid level to make sure it isnt and drain any excess just to be safe. The specs are 6.3 US quarts of fluid, so if you have overfilled it, it is only by a little amount.
