Default 96 accord stolen/recovered

Hi all,

My girlfriends 96 accord lx was stolen and recovered a few weeks ago. Surprisingly it came back in good shape, no broken windows, only minimal body damage from the car chase, engine runs great.

Of course though the stereo, and ignition switch and tumbler were ripped out into pieces (and for some reason the rear view mirror). I have been looking around hondaautomotiveparts and have not found everything needed to replace the ignition, and it is SUPER expensive.

Of course it will start and run fine with a screwdriver, but my main concern is the steering wheel locking up while driving it. Is this a reasonable concern? The whole key assy was torn out, and what ever circuit board is right there was ripped into pieces also.

Also what is the best way to just get it drivable? is a push button start a viable option...maybe a switch to turn on the assy's and so on, then puch button? Unless I get lucky and find everything I need in a junk yard it seems I am out of luck.

Any help would be great. This car runs to well to just junk it. Only 105000 miles and runs like new, just looks like HELL!

Do both yourself a BIG favor and do it right with the Ignition Lock/Switch assembly. It's a "Dealer Only" item (not enough sales to support aftermarket) but it's readily available. Note: #5

the job is not too difficult.

If you don't want to go the alarm route, I've often mounted a starter interupt switch either under the cup holder or in the bottom of the console compartment

Make sure that the ebay unit comes with the specialty screws* that are required to install the new Igntion Lock Set. (number #6 in the previous supplied link).
When you go to remove the old ones, the heads will twist off, leaving a stud that will require they be drilled out to remove the original broken set. You'll need new ones.

Good point. I might order them to be safe. I looked on her car, and it seems I will have to make my own slits in them because they are just round heads on them...

That's why I threw a Mototool into my tool box with a set of small cut-off wheels. Cuts slots like crazy.
