flip tires and slide?
since i have no camber adjustment (stock class) i wear my r's mostly from the center out. plus theres too much tire on the little rim (205 on a 5" rim.) so i recently flipped them and they felt rather slippery. it may have been the lot, but they still felt not up to par. they were good the week before, so its not like they've seen too many heat cycles. anyone experience this or was i just driving like poo?

sorry, i never flipped a set. mine wear even thank to mega negative camber.... oh, soloef, i got my *** anded to me today...i think i got 4th or 5th.....damn pax
yea. i got own'd today too. m-club course today just didn't agree with my car aka all sweepers and straights. with NO rear bar, the car wanted to push alot. i was a good 2 sec slower than people i usually beat. plus they changed classes around and put the 1.6 miata in my class. i was chasing them all day for no good reason.
The result of flipping them is you have less contact from the inside, to the centre of the tire. Run on them for a while and they will ware, camber to your suspension and improve.
i can't do any camber adj. i run in STOCK. next year with the suspension i will be ok and on streets in scca. so he r's will last alot longer

I didn't say add camber to your suspension, I said the tires will camber and your contact area will increase in width, improving their performance.
I had a similar thing happen to my rear tires. I noticed when I flipped them, what use to be the inside was practically brand new. But they were hard, like heat cycled hard. I think the tire gets heat cycled and become hard even though they barely got used.
My best explaination.

thats what i was affraid of. did they eventually scuff in or were they just a loss?

Spence,
I flip tires regularly (partly bad driving, partly too cheap to get new tires all the time
...anyway) I think it is because of the tires being slanted the wrong way now (the camber issue someone mentioned above). Just give the tires one more event and they should start to grip somewhat. But, they will NEVER feel like new.

heh. on my way home i was thinking "dave has flipped his r's. i'll e-mail him and ask"
i know they will never be like new. but as long as they haven't fallen off completely thats great. i was shoping for new ones all day. thanks a bunch.
-spence....who is breathing a sigh of relief that he doesn't have to buy a fresh set of r's.

CB still says it's heat cycling and some oxidation from exposure to the air/ozone.

nnnooooo. just when i thought i wouldn't have to buy tires. some one....anyone. please give me a def. answer so i know what i have to do. the r's are the only reason i'm compettive anywhere. if there dead i'd like to know so i can get at least 2 new ones. i wish i had a durometer(sp?)
if you can not afford new tires, order a bottle of Formula V Tire treatment. It does a great job bringing heat cycled tires back from the dead. It may increase their wear slightly, but they will grip better. I tried his recently on a set of old hoosiers and was amazed the difference it made. As for why it is doing that, I believe it is a combonation of being heat cycled and the wear of the tire.
"some one give me a def answer"
Surely you must be kidding. Look at the pros (F1, NASCAR, etc) and you will notice that even the experts complain about tires and grip. If they don't have definitive answers about how long a tire is "good" how do you expect us to?
If you have money buy new tires, if not then you will be going slower - live with it.

although the architecture of NASCAr is still 'old skool' the technology is all there, as much as in any pro road racing series. When you think about it, its amazing what they do with what they've got....
that is totally true. i just hate nascar. but thats another thread. i ended up driving about 40 miles on my r's cause my jack brole when i went to change them back at the end of the day. so i'm hoping that helped to level them out a bit. i'm also going to try the formula v and hopefully that will get me through to the end of the year. if not, i'll just have to pick up a fresh set.
I gave in recently to the mighty wallet drain and decided not to flip and just get new tires. I have the new Ectsa's. Haven't tried them out yet. I'll probably put them on soon and drive them around the streets for a bit...anyway...
If I were you, I would get two new tires and replace the worst and keep the best old tires on the back. The old tires will help with rotation !
If you start doing this, you will only have to replace two tires at a time. This will reduce one time out of pocket expenses, but obviously the same expense at the end.

i thought about that too. but since i kept up pn my rotating of tires there all the same. i got some formula v type stuff and i'm gonna try them out this weekend. if i'm still off, then i'm gonna order 2 new ones.
