fram vs honda oil filters
To me I've seen some diffrences in both oil filters. Though, I give fram credit since they actually have better construction. My question to others here is, does fram make better oil filters?
I have noticed that Fram consistantly uses a heavier gauge steel for their filter casings. I have used them on engines producing 60psi of oil pressure without case/seam failure. As far as filtering capacity, I'd defer to a long case type (more filter surface) as long as the application (vehicle) has room.
For a daily driver, just about any national brand will work; Fram being one of them.
Wow, I've always heard everyone say that Frams were junk... that the endcaps of the filter element were made out of cardboard, and that they can degrade, sending bits of cardboard into your engine. In fact, I remember seeing a thread where someone cut open like 20 different brands of filter to show the internals and confirming this.
I can't personally speak to how good Frams are, but I've heard enough bad about them that I use something else now... usually Wix. I'm afraid of the OEM honda filters since they changed their filter supplier to Fram.

Here's the comparison article I was talking about. I don't personally use Fram, but look inside the filters and judge for yourself:

Yes, *most* of the new Honda filters are made by Honeywell, which also makes Fram and several other brands. As you can see in the above article, most of the honeywell filters are identical internally, regardless of what name is on the can. I don't know 100% that the Honda filters are the same design as the standard honeywell... perhaps someone here has one they can cut open?
The S2K filters are still made in Japan (can't remember which company) and are compatible with most Honda engines... I know people use them on D, B, H, and K series anyway.

i just installed a fram on my isuzu the other day so i don't know how bad they are but i gave it a shot. they are cheap compared to others and you get what you pay for. on my honda though, i only use mobil 1. pretty much any filter that states is filter out 95%+ is probably worth trying. but since i use mobil one syntheic oil, i just keep it in the mobile 1 family.
fram XG series and only the XG series.. best bang for the buck

FRAM FILTERS SUCK! If you open a Fram filter you will seriously laugh. The ends are carboard and wax. They bypass valve is a joke and the anti drainback system is equally as lame. The casing is thin and cheap and the media is terrible and there are less pleats (i.e. less surface area). Then you open up a Premium WIX filter, NAPA (wix) or Carquest (wix) and everything is sturdy, heavy gauge and quality. A filter is a cheap part of maintenance on your car but more important than just about anything! Don't skimp on filters! NAPA has filter sales all the time where you can get a premium WIX filter for less than 4 bucks. Buy 5 and stock up for a while. You won't regret. Just cut them open and see!
