Which model 98-02 accords have tranny problems?
im lookin to buy a 98-02 honda accord sedan. been looking around for a stick shift one but cant find any. so now i'll probably buy a automatic but some of my friends had auto accords and they said their tranny was messed up. i was wondering which model accords have the tranny problems and what the warrenty was if there was a recall.
All of them.
The transmission warranty extension was to 109,000 miles (plus a few thousand due to the odometer settlement) or 93 months from in-service date for 00-01 Accords, meaning that '00s are no longer covered and '01 eligbility will be lapsing over the next several months. Some people have gotten help with '02s, but it's not a guarantee.
Don't buy an automatic. The '98-02 4-cylinder and '98-04 V6 automatic transmissions are nothing but trouble and our shop deals with the problems constantly. The F-series manuals have proven to be bulletproof.

I too was going to give you the snappy short answer "all of them" as well. But I'm going to preface my remarks with this crevat: "No one ever goes back to a dealer to say thank you; or that my car is just wonderful." ... at least at the service drive-up.
Just as there, a forum like this is queried by people looking for a solution; they ALL have problems.
So, of course, we're going to hear a disproportionate number of complaints here involving post '97 Honda Transmissions.
The truth of it is that we never hear of the vast number of Honda's that NEVER exibit a problem.
On a personal note: my 81yr old mom drives a 2k Accord, recieved the obligatory letter from Honda, and hasn't had a problem with the transmission after 215k miles.
The Marysville Ohio assembly plant built '98 accords at the rate of 1750/day after a 20 day startup to finally produce over 420,000 vehicles. Did all of these require transmission work - no. Did even 50% of them return to haunt dealers about transmission failures - no.
My advise: select a unit and ask if they would allow an independent mechanical audit of the car and have a transmission specialist evaluate it. The rest of the car is pretty much bullet proof; other than some issues with seat frames (recall) and ignition switches (recall).

I can attest to the bulletproof nature of the 5-spd. I've got 250k on mine and only on the 2nd clutch. I have not been gentle with it.
I think P-Adams raises a fair point. I guess the correct answer is that all 98-02 auto tranny accords POTENTIALLY have a problem. Independent inspection by an expert is a pretty good policy. I would stay away from any that have nasty looking or smelling fluid in them too.

My thinking?
It's had more than enough time to "soil the sheets" (so to speak) and just the fact that it hasn't; speaks volumes that it won't.
If it was going to fail, it would have by now.

all of the automatic accords have trans problems, I4 and particularly V6
jerky 2-1 downshift is one, you will notice a little nudge when coming to a stop
also if it ever revs on you instead of just going, its gon die
just baby it, when u park, always come to a complete stop, put her in neutral, set the parking brake, THEN take ur foot off the brake, then put 'er in park and gtfo
, when leaving and goin forward, not usin reverse, start the car in neutral
when backin up, always leave a few seconds in between shifts and be completly stopped or moving in the direction of the gear ur puttin it into when going between reverse and neutral and allow a 2-3 second rest in neutral
but you can still VTEC the **** out of it
