my car sounds bad, like a subaru.. need your help
need your help
check this out, driving on the highway all the sudden my car hesitates and starts sounding like a subaru. hollow misfire type of sound, and im loosing power. so i pull over and start trouble shooting. i try turning on the car but within 5 seconds it dies.
There was a big *** cloud of black smoke when this happened, i down shifted and drove it and it backfired a bit, ba, ba, ba.
pulled over
with the car off
1.check my spark plugs. NGKs look alright
2. open up the cap, to check on the rotor. rotor is good
with my car on sputtering, misfiring type of issue
3. check for the spark on the dist cap to the wires one by one, they all have good spark.
4. check the plug connection to the spark plugs, car is on and i lift cylinder 1 plug up, sure enough it starts to get worse. so i put it back on. back to bad. lift the cylinder 2 plug up, and it makes no difference. lift the cylinder 3 plug up and it gets worse, so i put it back in and it goes back to bad, cylinder 4 same thing gets worse, then i put it back in and it goes back to bad.
5. since number 2 was the only one that had no effect on the plug being lifted from the head, i decided to disconnect the injector. i unplug the injector on cylinder 2 and nothing happened, it was still running bad, but it did not get worse. i did that to cylinders 1,3,4 and it went from bad to worst. so defenetly something is wrong with cylinder 2's components.
6. bought new spark plugs, installed them
7.thinking it was a bad injector i flop injectors 2 and 4. cylinder 2 still dead. it has spark, tested the output of the injector harness thing, it has power.
8. cant find whats wrong with car, the injector works, the electrical works, air is going in.
9. i put water on the headers one by one. cylinder 1,3,4 burn up fast cylinder 2 stay wet. it is not releasing heat at all
10. I was stranded, i did not have a compression tester. i take the plug out of cylinder 2 turn the car on, and theres a lot of pressure comming out. so theres some sort of pressure right. i got air, fuel, spark, i dont know whats wrong?
11. i turn on the car sounding like a subaru, no disrespect. but it sounds like ****, with one cylinder out. the car turns on and runs but turns off if you slow down unless you give it some gas. did not drive it much.
Does any one know what is wrong with my car, what did i miss.
need your help, what do you think

i am having the same problem with my R.
Since Nov. I've had the same problem.
I need to swap fuel filter and check wiring/grounds/ecu.
Anyone have any suggestions and no it isn't Water in Gas and as far as i can tell it isn't a machanical issue since i have fixed the problem and then it comes back. With mechanical problems they will not go away with cleaning injectors and new plugs.
Any suggestions

(i'm basing this on when my friend's EM1 turbo died when he put a hole in cylinder 3 and it then proceeded to sound like an STi with an N1 exhaust)

If what you say is accurate then your only issue is with cylinder #2. A motor only needs 3 things to run. Spark, fuel and compression. Take away one of these three things from any cylinder and you have a misfire. if your positive you have good spark and positive the injector is good (fuel), then the problem has to be compression, i.e. bent/damage valve, valves out of adjustment, damaged piston. Highly unlikley if your motor is stock/unmolested or you didn't mis-shift and overrev. If thats the case i have a feeling your issue is spark or fuel. Is your check engine light on? do you have the means to pull the codes?
Most likely a burned valve resulting in a dead cylinder. Do a compression test asap and it can tell you if you really do have a burned valve.
Also, when you crank the car over, does the starter sound funny?...Like does it sound like it's skipping or cranking faster? If so, then cylinder 2 is low or has lost compression altogether.

every time i've had this problem wih a honda, it was the plug wires. a fresh set of NGK blues alwys fixed it. i've had this problem with all kinds of aftermarket and autozone plugwires. they are all CRAP.
also, if you have washed your engine latel, water getting down in the spark plug tubes will also cause the sputter/misfire
if you have ngk blues now, then you most likely have a loss in compresion on #2 due to probably a slightly bent or burnt valve

go to autozone and pick up a compression tester. As long as all the cylinders are 5-10 within each other then it your compression should be fine. But from your writeup it sounds like a burnt or bent valve.
Thanks for all the input, here are the compression test results. cylinder 1. 240 cylinder 2. 0!!, cylinder 3 and 4 220.
Spoke to my pops over the phone, most likely a bent valve. he's a mechanic but specializes in rock crawlers. hey, speed is my thing.
I have an extended warranty for 100K Im on 61K so ill take it to an Acura dealership, have them deal with it. i payed for the warranty, have them fix it.
Im not shure if anything else might of gotten damaged.
should i do that or buy aftermarket valves and put them on myself?

go with Acura if they'll do it. no point in aftermarket valves imo... valvesprings and cams, thats worth it though if you have it apart

I was being nice, but you fu*@d up. a Type R on 7 pounds of boost is by far way faster than a Subaru on 20 pounds.
This, is a Type R forum. please don't stop joking, we love it. keep checking this site out..
Type R's are numbered, your cars are manufactured in the thousands. whatever you drive its manufactured in the thousands!!
Im going to disrespect the Subaru's, homies have them. But you, you sound like **** quicchatch253

Check plug wires for burn through spots. They are probably arcing off the inside of the cylinder head (spark plug well) common honda 4 cyl problem.
Just happened last month to my prelude

This happened to me last week. After putting new plugs in, taking off the fuel rail and cleaning it and all the injectors, replacing the fuel filter, cap, and rotor, it turned out that if I take the wire off #3 while the car is running and hold it next to something metal, something was damaged cause the spark was jumping from the outside of the boot about halfway up. The wires were only 6 months old but I tossed a new set on and it runs mint.
Don't get all paranoid that it's a bent valve or a blown ring until you've worked out all the rest of the diagnostic stuff. Everyone jumped all over my thread saying it was the rings, or a head gasket, or some bent valves, or my timing belt is skipping teeth. And in the end it turned out to be a 4.99 spark plug wire.

I agree since my R did similar things when i blew my valves with a stupid *** downshift. It would still run and i limped it home but it sounded like what the OP describes.
Whether that has anything to do with the OP situation or not, valves could have started it.

If its not a big thing to you, just take off the head and check for yourself. It doesn't take long at all and can be done with simple hand tools, just my opinion.
