Default Changing Valve Stem Seals

I need to get my valve seals replaced. I plan on doing it with everything still installed in the motor. Has anyone done this before? The motor is a B16. the biggest thing it the timing when Im done. I can use the cam swapping method for the first cylinder so that i dont ahve to mess with the timing belt really. But I would have to put everything back together, rotate it so the other pistons are tdc and hopefully line everything back up again. Any pointers for doing this?

what?
cams off the valves are all closed you can turn the crank all you want.

after your done. set the crank back to tdc put the cams in at tdc and thats it.

Since you are a novice, I would suggest pulling the timing covers off and prepare to set up timing just like doing a timing belt job once you are finished with the seals. Let us know how you are going to hold the valves closed during the job and we can give more guidance, there are a few different ways to do that.

1. tdc the motor for cylinders 1,4(keeps the piston close to the valves in case they want to fall in)
2. using compressed air you can now change your seals for cylinders 1,4(leak down tester will work fine as long as it has a pressure regulator switch to keep the air tight in the cylinder)
3. tdc cylinders 2,3 and do the same for the seals
4.optional but worthwhile since you're at it have a look at the timing belt and water pump and tensioner for any abnormalities...
5. align cylinders 1,4 to tdc and re-install your timing belt

i cant describe this process easier than this...

My old Sears compression tester gauge with hose fits my air compressor quick disconnect (QD). So if you have an air compressor and a compression tester hose of the correct type QD, remove the schrader valve out of the end of the hose, screw it into the spark plug hole and go to town, but you need to keep the engine (crankshaft) from turning so you need to lock down the crank somehow.
