Default JDM B16A Vs. USDM B16A2

Well, long story short, in the recent past I had a 93 Civic DX Coupe with a swapped JDM B16A/JDM 98 ITR Tranny. I/H/E and Hondata S300. The car was quick and I loved it but I got in an accident. Well, I just picked up a 99 Si. I put the whale ***** from my 93 onto the Si and VTEC in the Si was incredibly much louder than the 93. I really don't understand why VTEC is louder, its actually ear deafening but I like it If anyone can explain why there is a difference, I would be very appreciative. Thanks.

Honestly there is no real explanation for this that I know of. Its hard for me to say because I never heard your old car. Are you sure your Si doesn't have cams? I have a 99 Si and it was loud before the cams but significantly more so after the installation. There could be other things involved like different exhaust manifold/header or different exhaust setup.

I personally think it may have a little to do with the intake setup, but cant back it up. One of my friends had a 92 gsr (b17a1) and its vtec x-over was extremely loud, you could literally hear a 1/4 mile away maybe more and it was stock besides a cheap intake and muffler. Another one of my friends just got a 00 ex with b18c swap with lsd trans, the guy he got it from said it had s2 cams but i his vtec x-over i dont think is any louder than my d16z6

The louder the initial sound is the bigger the power dip is before vtec.... after a tune (on stock cams) the crossover is less dramatic due to fuel being filled in at the dipping point. still reaches the same sound (loudness) but is a smoother transition..

if that jdm gsr still had the stock manifold the sound of vtec is muffled by the dual runner intake manifold.

He probably swapped some CTR cams, a lot of people do that including me, Civic Type R cams are 'slightly' more aggressive than ITR cams. So swapping CTR cams is a great bang for the buck for B16's without having a built head, and significantly louder also.

Intake, header, exhaust or whatnot won't make that big a diff on how loud Vtec is, its the cams that more or less create the exhuast note (considering alot of other things), not the exhaust.

Of course thier gonna be louder, cause I/H/E are all less restrictive than stock, thats their purpose...

Does Vtec engage at the same time in each swap, or they slightly different?

It could have to do with the exhaust. my friend took his axle back off and vtec kicked in 10 times louder and then took the rest of the exhaust off and it wasnt as loud because the it was louder throughout the whole rpm.

Yeah I like how you take half of one sentence out of a paragraph, and try and make me look like a dumbass. Good try.

Were talking about an unmodified car, were talking about how loud VTEC kicks, everyone knows I/H/E mods will make the car louder.....But its an unmodified car, so I/H/E don't apply here. The one part of the engine that generally is credited with giving the natural tone of an engine is the cams, nothing else is quite as significant.

The OP says VTEC is a helluva lot louder in this B16 then his previous. So logically I jump to the conclusion that the cams might have been swithched out, if VTEC is so noticable in a unmodified car. And I wouldn't be surprised if the previous owner didn't switch in some CTR cams that he probably got for cheap. And the previous owner probably had I/H/E, but put stock I/H/E back on the sell the car. How many people on here have put stock I/H/E to sell a car before?..I have.

Half-right. 94 - 96 ITR cams were slightly less aggresive. 97 - 01 ITR cams are the same as CTR cams.

This should help:

whale ***** = password jdm / J's racing short ram intake........

but anyway my un logical answer would be japan knew that loud obnoxious America would want more sound and less power so that what they did..... kept the power and smooth transition for themselves and gave us the loud less powerfull VTECCCC everyone here loves......

i had a b16a2 with i/e and vtec has a VERY LOUD transition... so he dosnt have the only loud b16a2 alive....

also he is used to hearing vtec out of a car with i/h/e... that sound is much different that intake only.... he is only hearing the and no exhaust..... i noticed a big change in sound after i added a exhaust to my rsx when it already had an intake.....

all 99-00 Si's vtec crossover is loud...i have the stock cams, and my buddy has the CTR cams. Both are loud, his has a just barely noticeable difference. I think the 99-00 Si vtec x-over sounds better than the new '08 Si's.

I happen to like the fat crossover sound in my car. I don't drive fast or hard really. But sometimes I'll just punch it so I can hear vtec roar. Plus passengers always think it's cool.

it is because the usdm 99civic si vtec hits at 5500 rpm and the jdm b16a if you were running a jdm ecu would hit vtec sooner somewhere around 4500 or so.
