Default Question about setting timing

Just bought a 90 hatch with a ZC block and Z6 head. Doesn't seem to have much pull below 3k, and i think it might be a timing problem. Problem is, it is missing the lower timing belt cover. I plan on getting a new one, but is there any way to check the timing with that cover missing? Isn't the timing pointer on the belt cover?

just make sure that u cam sprocket is ponting tdc and in the crank u may get a mark in ur oil pump, not so sure of this, or simply get a manual or go to autozone website and look for the manual of both engines and ull find an answer.
