Default problem with crv over heating

ok this morning I new csomething was wrong with my 01 crv. the gas peddle was abnormally stiff. I turned around to head home to switch vehicles before heading to work and it over heated VERY quick. I turned the heater on fll blast and it helped. once I parked it here was a faint smell of coolant but I didn't have time to mess with it I just got in the other car and left. I was just wondering what some of the possibilites are, what I need to look for. coud it be th thermostat? any help is greatly appriciated

broken and fully leaked radiator/line or a bad thermostat.
