Default 97 civic muffler

So the muffler on the gf's car (97 Civic LX sedan) is on its way out... tailpipe section is 'droopy' and it's not too loud yet, but I can't say that it's as quiet as it used to be either (I'm not a fan of the B series exhaust note, but they're cheap to run and last forever).

Instead of getting some factory type replacement muffer, I was thinking of getting something that would give it a little extra performance/mpg maybe, but hell no I'm not putting a buzzy sounding folgers can on it (it has to be quiet, or relatively quiet).

any suggestions would be appreciated
matt

p.s. are any direct fit type? These would be easier to install as I wouldn't have to have the hangers welded in.

Get a non-OEM one, and it is not going to last long, especially in Michigan. You can bolt the OEM right on, and it's only about $135 via bkhondaparts.com . See and double check at http://www.bkhondaparts.com/billkay/...hidIrno=%7C003

Do a tuneup (OEM parts only for ignition parts); maintain the cooling system; change PCV valve and maybe thermostat; inflate tires 5 psi over the spec for best fuel mileage.

i had the same thing happen to me with my 98 civic lx. i just took mine to a muffler shop and had them run me a whole new exhust and it was actually cheaper then an aftermarket one. as for muffler a ws2 is pretty sweet. thermal's mufflers are good too

good info here...
NGK aftermarket ignition parts work well also (oem suppler to a lot of companies), but otherwise I'd run OEM if it's a stock/lightly modified car.

gf went to local muffler shop that likes to install 'factory' non oem prebent pipes...

$260

Yea, I'm not happy, but her dad told her to go for it for the lifetime warranty. And the end of the tailpipe is pinched in funny (why? did they drop it? is it some chinese part?). I'll have to post a pic.
