Icon2 98 4cyl. strange starting problem

HELP?

was backing it out of the garage and it stalled (cold engine) and wouldn't start again.

it will turn over like it wants to start. smells of gas. checked plugs and there is no spark.

the strange thing is...when i back off of the ignition, it does fire for one second but only

when i let off trying to start. crank sensor?

the distributor is fairly new though not oem.... no spark

coil problem?

took distr apart and is dry and clean. only about 5k on it. try replacing internals of distr?

NO Check engline light

I would suggest you get your VIN and call the dealer to see if the ignition switch recall has been done to your car.
The reason I'd suspect the ignition switch is because I've limped many of them into the shop holding the key just a little bit off the crank position to keep them running.

what would a bad CPS act like? codes first?

its a 98 with 280k. could be anything. 50k on engine so all sensors are relatively new...

If it is not the ignition switch I would test the ECT temp sensor, if it shows the engine super cold, like -40F, then it will want to flood the engine on start up and you would smell gas and I would think that it is washing down the rings and getting fuel into the oil so it will smell of gas too, if it does then it will need changed right now.

its not cold here. the car stays in a climate controlled garage of around 65F. why wouldnt there be spark?

Power for the distributor comes directly from the ignition switch, a bad ECT sensor does not care how warm your garage is, if it wants to go open circuit, then it will tell the computer that it is -40F and flood the engine. You seem to think that your problem is a no start, no spark issue though so lets go for that instead.

You will need help to turn the key and verify that you have no spark, are you saying that you did that already. If you have an old spark plug, cut the L off of the end so the spark has to jump as far as possible, leave your good plug in the engine while grounding this test plug to the top of the engine to look for spark or intermittent spark.
