Default My windshield wiper arms move erratically and too far...motor? loose hinge?

My 96 Accord wiper arms i just noticed move too far..

and by too far i mean anything past the slowest wiper speed...the wiper blades sweep pass the location were they are supposed to stop and return to the bottom.

sometimes on the up stroke they sweep past the glass and touch the a-pillers.

when i turn them off the wiper arms stop about 3-4 inches too high from where they are supposed to stop.

is this a case of a worn motor? loose hinges? is this common?

anyone else experience this? This is really annoying and its raining. Its become a safety issue because the passenger wiper extends past where it should stop and instead stops in my line of vision....its hard to explain but very distracting

Remove the plastic covers at the attachment point, reposition the arms properly and tighten down the 12mm or 14mm nuts, pretty tight.

Either:
a worn Wiper Motor shaft bushing (#1)(effects both)
a loose Wiper Motor Crank Arm (#7) (effects both)
or
Worn Wiper Transmission components (effects either one or both)
could be the culprit.

Here's an illustration of the system:

If you feel no slop between both wiper arms, (hold one stationary and try to move the other one), it's most likely either link #12, or crank arm #7. It's rare that the Wiper Moter requires replacement...

its pretty crazy seeing the wiper arm come off the glass and touch(wipe) the a-piller.

I'll get to it this evening to see whats wrong.

Hi,

I had the exact same problem.
What was your problem ? Which piece on the diagram did you change ?

THanks
