91 EX VSS Question?
Does the VSS not working correctly cause just the speedo/odometer not to work? My gauges: fuel, temp, and rpm all work. I ordered one today and will replace and let you all know if it makes the speedo/odometer work again.
Thanks.
Thanks.
When I jumped the blue male end under the passenger side of the dash it would make the CEL blink 6 times over and over again. My "S" light would also blink but very fast.
That would be for the ECT, engine coolant temp sensor, it may be possible that someone unplugged it one day while the key was on or the engine was running and tripped the code, you would probably notice if there was a real problem with it.
im currently having the same problem... im curious as to which is the problem though? the cluster or the vss... sometimes when im driving the speedo will work for like a minute then it'll just drop back down to 0 and my CEL will come out a few minutes into driving.

Yes, it seems that TJ (LOL) and the OP have two different scenarios, if there is a code in the ECU then more than likely, the VSS is a fault, if the speedo is acting up and there is no code in the ECU them more than likely, the speedo is at fault. Many cars have the speedo and the Odo tied together but not all.
The VSS can be tested with a voltmeter while spinning the VSS driveshaft with your hand very slowly, if it is in a 5 Volt system as most are, then the meter will show 5 volts then 0 volts as the shaft is turned very slowly, but beware of an intermittent VSS, I would leave a meter hooked up to the VSS input to the ECU, when the speedo stops working, I would hope that the VSS input would be dead while moving the car forward extremly slowly.

I replaced the VSS, boy what a chore that was. It took me about an hour. The hardest part was getting the wire fitting male side to plug into the female side of the new part. These aftermarket parts can really be a PITA to work with. Anyways, once I finished I started the car and the CEL came on and the "S" light blinked. Then I turned it off and turned it on again a little later and the lights were off. Go figure?????? I have not driven it yet but will and let you know what it does.
If you did not recheck the codes via the 2 pin diagnostic connector then the code is still there, you either have to manually check it which in turn clears the code or drive the car so the ECU can see that the part was fixed and it will reset or clear the code automatically.
OK, I just took a drive a couple of miles and the VSS must have worked for me. The "S" light is off and only comes on when you hit the button like it is supposed to work. The speedo and odometer are both working properly. The only thing is the CEL is on. When I jump the blue connector under the passenger side of the dash it keeps blinking 6 times over and over agin.
How do I turn this CEL off???

It should clear the code simply by jumping the blue connector and unjumping it. You will need to disconnect the battery so you will need to reset your radio stations and clock again, there is a fuse to pull to do the job but I do not know which one for your model.
