street suspension question, suspension gods chime in
Hello forum, so I have been searching, researching, reading my dam eyelashes of on suspensions and I am completely lost, mixed reviews here and there, everybody contradicts everybody, so I decided to make a thread to seek some real help, first of all, been a member since 01' have had slammed rides ever since, but now I seek change, im not 17 anymore, my body doesn't like the bouncing, loud noises that come from the car when I hit a pot hole or pebble, its no longer fun to have the man jugs bounce violently for 40 minutes to work, to drive 2 hours to my hometown and get there with the worst back ache ever, so change is deffenitely going to happen, I just need direction, I have rode stock, and I just do not feel the whole " I handle like a boat" think, looking for a mild setup, something that will be good to work on the daily grind, but also twist good when im heading to my hometown, I don't want coilovers, simply because figuring out suspensions is like doing calculus to me (I suck at math) I thought engine swaps and wiring was challangeing, hell no! This is by far the most complicated things I have ventured into. So, on to the good stuff, car is a 92 civc vx hatch, gsr swap, im 290 (fat ***) and I think that should be the only factors, right now its on stock shocks and cut aftermarket springs, drop zone I think, I didn't cut them it was already like that, my commute to work is pretty rough, its in tucson az, if any tucsonians can relate to golf links rd. My car absolutely rides like **** and handling is no good, not that I know what a good handling car feels like but I know mine is not good. So with that said, I need some advice to what kind of setup I can do, I want springs for sure, but I need to match them with good struts, rates and strut stiffness just can't seem to translate well to what I want, all imput and help is greatly apreciated and I apologize for the post if it drifted off subject, thanks
Just get some quality shocks/springs with a mild lowering. I have Koni Yellows and H&R sports. The H&Rs are a little soft, but when combined with a low setting on the Konis make a decent ride. Add a larger rear sway bar and some good tires and thats all you need. I can lift the inside rear wheel with Ecsta ASX, so when I move up to a summer tire it should be crazy.
Well really no budget but I don't want to go ridiculously expencive really, keep in mind, this car will never see the track, occasional canyon carving but that's it,
Koni 8041-Sport dampers with your choice of progressive lowering spring. I usually recommend H&R Sports, but Tein S.Techs will work fine too if they offer the height and softness that you're after.
If you want to save a little bit, go with Tokico Illumina dampers. If you don't want an adjustable damper, go with Bilstein HDs.
Remember to have the car aligned after changing the ride height. Ignore the camber and set the toe to dead center of the factory spec range at all four corners to eliminate uneven tire wear.
