oven cleaner
i just pulled my motor out of my bay and it's got 15 years of grime and i was wondering if anyone has try to use oven cleaner in the bay i havn't tryed anything yet but i'm just dreading it. i mean i can't use a hose because it's winter time and the water as been shut off outside. but i can use wash buckets. any idea's would also be good but i was thinking that the oven stuff works real good on the oven that it be an easy thing if no one as any worrys let me know and i'll try it i just don't want it to eat the medtal and paint.(sory for a nubie question)
yeah, some powerful degreaser bottled in various strengths that is plastic and paint safe, various brushes (nothing harsher than a toothbrush IMO), some shop rags, etc. an adjustable spray bottle with hot water too...
the right cleaner should lift the grime if saturate and agitated with a good all purpose cleaner. i use optimum powerclean, but there surely is something that is more popular and readily available at auto parts stores.

Im just a fan of the cheap *** "Supertech" brand brake cleaner and engine degreaser you can get at walmart. $1.69 for a big can, and the degreaser is a foam and sets for a long time and really works well.
Ive used purple power in the past and it wasnt that great.
IMO I wouldnt use oven cleaner because it can eat through some types of aluminum. The oven/grill cleaner we use at work will more than likely eat through a block if you let it set for long anough and put it on thick anough, thats for more industrial **** though. I'd just stick to regular engine degreaser and elbow grease.

i use purple power on all my motors and it never has let me down. i've got a tub of purple power that i soak all my parts in and pull them out daily to wash and then put back in them to get them looking brand spanking new.
