How do I replace my CV joint ? (this is an integra axle)

~Im trying to swap cv's because mine is bad and buying a raxle,hasport or whatever is more expensive

~I've been hammering for ever and thats not working ...so?

PROBLEM SOLVED: My so called problem with my new cv joint was ACTUALLY my passenger seat belt swaying back and forth hitting the side of the car. note I have no interior so the metal part was hitting the metal car making a knocking sound that I thought was the cv going bad when I turned. I am not joking..and I've been flippin out about this too Lol

so now my H22a 93 civic hatch has stock prelude midshaft and passenger 1990 integra (no ABS) outer cv joint and shaft/93 prelude inner joint. I also am using the Hasport motor mounts.

is this just a stock b series interga? why not go to auto zone and get an axle?

 

sry I didnt specify ~ I have an h22 93 civic hatch ~ I am swapping integra cv joints because I like the legnth of the shaft.

it is ten times safer to get hasports or use other axles.. for the strength of it .. if its a h22 they make decent power i wouldnt put axles together.. but also using hasports high power axles ur at risk at damaging ]ur diff. before snappin a axle..

 

some people use a slide hammer. i just hold it as straight as possible and nock it with a hammer.

 

get a new one ....

 

you need to be sure you have any circlips off..
To get axles apart as you are trying to do at work (on non-hondas) i once made a tool which was a half-moon piece of steel (heated it with oxy and moulded it around an old axle) and i welded a lond rod on the end to hammer it off. I did this so i didnt hammer on the little bearings as you will damage them easily. The axle you posted looks to be different in design to the ones i was working with, so you may be able to use something other than a halfmoon looking tool, use your imagination

You may possibly be able to get something to hammer it off without damaging the bearings...
Sometimes they can slide off easily, other times they can be a real bitch.

You may simply have forgotten to remove a circlip, clean the grease and check for that first.

 

You need to center up the axle and use a dead blow hammer or if all you have is a BFH then hit close to the center of the C.V. joint. I suggest you have the C.V. held in a bench vise of some sort. I am actually a Honda Tech. so we do this stuff all day at work. I would leave the boot on the C.V. but remove the smaller clamp and let it come off all together. Leaving the boot on the C.V. will protect it from the beating you are about to give it. LOL but it will work and when you go to re-install it make sure you grease it very well and center the little "c" clip on the axle side and just hammer it back on to the axle as straight as possible. if you don't have a dead blow please use a piece of wood on the end of the C.V. so you don't damage the thread on the end.

 

The outer joints really aren't meant to come apart. I've seen guys break the cage trying, thats not to say it can't be done, but honestly I think you'd be better off buying another axle.

K hammering is great and all, even using a bolt or somthing better, but I don't see any clips. Shouldnt there be 2 clips. one on right side of the joint and one on the other. BUT No clips. There must be a clip under the joint, the one I cant see or get off! My only choice is to hit harder :/

 

i wouldnt try to take it apart and re use it...it says dont disassemble for a reason...just buy new ones, they aernt too expensive....

 

just bothers me ~ because so many people say to use 90-93 or the 88-89 integra axles. But this is not working for me soooo $69.99 for a lifetime warranted axle or $180 or so for some custom axle.


I put the 90 integra outer and shaft on the 95 prelude inner joint and put it in my 95 H22a civic but when I turn while driving it goes thump thump..ugh ~ ~ make me crazy

 

There is a circlip on the shaft, which pops itself into a groove on the splines of the outer joint. When removing the outer joint, simply hit the joint, as you are doing, to slide off this circlip.

At Honda dealerships, and at my work now, popping off outer joints for boot replacement was done everyday. I have had ZERO issues doing so.

Here's a picture of my V6 shafts with stock outer joints...you can see the circlip groove.

 

oh, and BTW- most cheap Chinese axles from autozone are NOT meant to come apart and do not match up splines with stock Honda ones....most of the time

I've been hitting! The old cv joint finally came off, but I cant get the new joint off the new shaft to replace the old one. I have it in a vice and even tried a huge 3 foot hammer. no luck . Im soon to go crazy. Tried using 1/4 steel and the hammer. no luck . Maybe the special tool could help ..ugh

 

3 days of pounding ~ I've given up ~ I will be buying an aftermarket axle
