What do you guys know about the Acura EL?
So as some may know my hatch was totaled out on wed. Thanks to this shitty Wisconsin weather and a couple of jackass ***** that don't know how to drive. I'm looking at getting something solid and backoff from the "boyracer" image if only for awhile.
Seriously looking at buying the 99' Acura EL thats listing here on HT. Looks clean, solid, and with that little 1.6 it should get good mpg...here are the questions i have:
What motor did these come with? 130hp ex d16y8?
What's the reason these even exsist and why didn't we get them?
Any known issues/recalls?
He asking $4800, it has about 90k miles, and has no bodywork or damage whatsoever...is this a good price?
How difficult is it to source body parts if i got into another accident?
What else can anyone tell me about them? did they ever come in a 5spd?

D16Y8 127hp
Part of it probably has to do with the fact that we didn't get a real EX sedan in canada for 96 - '00 (our EX is more in line with a US LX, D16Y7 and no moonroof) I guess the biggest reason is honda thought they'd sell. Which they did. The first year they were released they made up 51% of acura's new car sales
For the most part they should have the same problems 6th gen civics had as thats more or less what they are, just with more upscale features and different front and rear clips.
Sounds reasonable to me.
Some parts, like doors I believe are identical to 6th gen civic sedan doors. Front and rear bumpers you might have a harder time getting, but still shouldn't be anywhere near immpossible.
I believe so. NOFX can probably give you a lot more insight on this.

There was 3 trim models for the EL in the years you're looking at. Base, Sport, and Premium.
Premium was full load with leather, sunroof, alloy wheels, and chrome trim pieces.
Sport had alloy wheels and power options, cloth seats, no sunroof.
Base had some power options, but came with steelies and hubcaps.
Motor is a D16Y8, and yes, they came in 5spd.
You may be able to get parts for it from an Acura dealership in canada, but that depends if they're willing to sell to the US and if you're a bodyshop or not as well.

-Premiums only had the chrome trim on the '99-'00 years
-Sports in '99-'00 did have a sunroof
-Base had no ABS as well
And for the record, you can get parts shipped out to the US if you need them, but be prepared to pay over the phone first for the parts and also to get butt-raped if you need to order large body panels.
I did send out a few orders before to Seattle that consisted of a trunk lid, rear bumper, front hood and fenders and other misc. trim peices...that shop wasn't happy with how much shipping was
